The Geotechnical Engineering Unit collects and analyzes subsurface information and provides geotechnical engineering designs and recommendations for roadways and structures. We are looking for a Regional Investigations Manager to manage the geotechnical investigations group in our Harrisburg Field Office.
In this role you will:
+ Manage the daily operations of the professional personnel assigned to your work group.
+ Ensure the continuous training and development of assigned personnel as well as individual and work group performance.
+ Oversee the evaluation and interpretation of subsurface conditions and preparation of deliverables to convey those conditions to others for the purposes of design and construction.
+ Develop recommendations related to mass grading of roadway corridors and constructability of pavements.
+ Develop requests for proposals and estimates for geotechnical work performed by consultants.
+ Oversee consultant preconstruction project work including review of deliverables, evaluation of performance, and invoicing.
+ Perform site visits for meetings, observing and documenting site conditions, and observing consultant investigations.
This role will require occasional overnight travel.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
+ Knowledge of the principles and practices of geotechnical engineering and geology related to geotechnical investigations using drill rigs, cone penetration soundings, hand augers, in-situ sampling and testing, and laboratory testing.
+ Experience developing investigation scopes of work, manhour and cost estimates, and schedules.
+ Experience managing geotechnical investigations, assigning laboratory testing, reporting investigation results, and developing and writing roadway recommendations related to subgrade stabilization, undercuts, handling of groundwater, and use of earth materials in construction.
+ Experience writing requests for proposals, negotiating consultant contracts, and managing consultants in the performance of geotechnical investigations and preparation of roadway recommendations.
+ Experience managing and directing personnel, leading multi-disciplinary teams through process improvements and conflict resolution, promoting teamwork, and fostering communication with NCDOT staff and consultants.
Additional Expectations:
Must be able to legally operate a state vehicle.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience including two (2) years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualification
May require registration as a Professional Engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
