When it comes to the most challenging environmental issues facing our communities today, we’re focused on developing and delivering the most innovative solutions to improve our tomorrow. We’re looking for a Mechanic I to work on sites surrounding the Baltimore, MD area.
Work will include, but not be limited to, the following:
* Routine maintenance and support, environmental monitoring, and site development construction support.
* Assist the site supervisor in maintaining the daily Operation Log and monitoring the groundwater gradient monitoring system by completing daily inspections and completing daily inspection logs.
* Maintenance of the process pumps: quarterly check of bolts, packing, and alignment, and an annual performance test.
* Monitor the groundwater collection and transfer operation: monitor system performance and maintain all valves and process piping within the tank room and truck transfer bay.
* Annual cleaning of the two 11,000-gallon storage tanks and inspection/cleaning of the truck transfer bay collection sump.
* Repair/re-thread manhole lid bolt threads and roadway vault access hatch threads.
* Maintenance of the extraction well system pressure gauges at least quarterly or more frequently as determined by the Honeywell site representative.
* Measure water levels of the piezometers to verify the accuracy of the ultrasonic water level measurements on a monthly basis.
* Monthly inspections of the extraction well vaults and any maintenance activities identified during the inspection.
* Inspection and maintenance of the valves (testing opened and closed) and pressure relief valves on a monthly basis.
* Assist in monitoring the pumping activities of each well system pump and, monthly, inspect the well system pumps by turning them on and off if they do not already cycle on at least on a monthly basis.
* Control vegetative growth on the outboard embankment with an annual herbicide application.
* Portions of the site will be inspected for the presence of debris. General trash will be removed as access and safe conditions allow.
* Periodic visual inspection of the site surface soil and multimedia caps to detect any problems with the cap system. The cap surface will be inspected annually and after storms to detect water ponding that may indicate settlement.
* Calibrate 4-gas confined space entry meters.
* Fault find/repair/replace ultrasonic water level sensors.
* Faultfind, remove/repair/replace electric piston pumps.
* Safely load leachate tanker trucks.
OTHER ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
* Install, repair, and maintain mechanical equipment, including heavy equipment and vehicles, as needed, on project sites.
* Ensures that the installation and repair of equipment complies with agency policy and local codes and regulations.
* Replace units or parts, such as gears, bearings, and filters.
* Test newly installed and pre-existing mechanical equipment.
* Order replacement parts for equipment.
* Identify and confirm the time frame for completion of repairs.
* Use precision tools such as micrometer migs, dial indicators, and RPM indicators.
* Communicates the necessity for proper and timely maintenance of all equipment to operators and/or management personnel.
* Assists management personnel to train on-site staff on proper equipment maintenance techniques.
* Works with management and other maintenance staff to develop and implement a preventative maintenance program for project mechanical equipment and/or vehicles.
* Persons appointed to this position are subject to being called to duty in emergencies.
* May include responsibilities for overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of managed staff; interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, delegating, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Appointment to some sites may require confined space entry. A confined space is large enough that an employee can bodily enter and perform assigned tasks but has limited or restricted means for entry or exit and is not designed for continuous employee occupancy.
These areas could include tanks, manholes, silo pits, vaults, spillways, vessels, etc., and could have the possibility to contain an atmospheric hazard. Employees working at these types of facilities will be required to enter and perform the work involved with confined spaces and will be required to adhere to all safety procedures and participate in trainings associated with confined space entry.

* Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a GED equivalency certificate.
* Seven years’ experience performing installation, repair, and maintenance of mechanical equipment.
* Formal schooling from an accredited vocational school with a major in a related field may be substituted for experience. Education experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to three years of the required experience.
* Appointment to some sites may require the ability to obtain a security clearance.
* US Citizenship.
* Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, and the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
* The employee is occasionally required to lift 50 lbs, using proper lifting technique, and regularly required to use proper protective equipment such as coveralls, vision and hearing protection, steel-toed shoes, and hard hats when necessary.
* Possession of a valid driver's license meeting the requirements of Maryland law.
* While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk and use hands and arms to handle equipment. The employee is also regularly required to hear and talk. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and climb to service equipment.
* Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
