    Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

    Bachelor’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). One (1) year of full-time experience working with students in an academic setting. Highly proficient professional experience in: word processing, spreadsheet management, electronic messaging and internet applications.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Master’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in higher education, student affairs, social work, counseling or related discipline. Experience in academic advising, working with undergraduates. Experience working with an engineering student population and/or knowledge of engineering disciplines. Experience coordinating programs and/or events. Experience supervising students. Experience creating and hosting academic success or wellness workshops or training.

    Brief Description of Duties:

    The Academic Success Advisor provides academic advising to undergraduates in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) and coordinates efforts that support student academic success goals. The advisor leads the coordination of the Area of Interest (AOI) program, and advises a cohort of AOI students. This position focuses on supporting students' timely admission to CEAS majors, and serves as a point of contact for other campus advisors and non-CEAS students’ inquiries about declaring a CEAS major. This position supports the CEAS Peer Mentoring Program, helping to advise and train peer mentors and identify success tools for program participants. Finally, this position identifies strategies and both academic and non-academic interventions to support CEAS students’ academic success. The successful incumbent will work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving. They will have strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.

     

    + Academic Advising:

    + Provide high quality, proactive undergraduate academic advising, interpreting academic rules and regulations for the specialized area of engineering and applied sciences. Such advising will occur in individual and group settings on an ongoing basis, and will include regular communication about courses, majors, degree requirements, and policies/procedures.

    + Analyze student record/degree audit and utilize data to identify areas for intervention.

    + Help students develop meaningful educational plans that are compatible with career and life goals, including selection of appropriate courses and interpretation of institutional requirements toward established goals.

    + Area of Interest Coordination:

    + On a semesterly basis, create and update AOI checklists to evaluate AOI students’ progress towards major declaration and provide upcoming term course recommendations.

    + Work with the CEAS Coordinator of Recruitment & Retention to devise communication strategies and timelines to provide students with resources to support their successful degree completion.

    + Conduct proactive intervention and communicate to AOI students regarding their major admission status, major application processes, resources to support their success, enrollment processes and academic deadlines.

    + Actively follow up with students who need high support based upon academic progress and/or who do not achieve particular benchmarks, including but not limited to timely semester enrollment, satisfactory GPA, credits earned, declared major, major progress, and general education progress. Place and remove advising holds as needed.

    + Train and update USO staff on the AOI advising process.

    + Peer Mentoring Support:

    + Pre-screen applicants to the CEAS Peer Mentoring Program based on a rubric provided by the Lead Coordinator of Student Engagement and make recommendations for interviews.

    + Work collaboratively with the Lead Coordinator of Student Engagement and campus partners to devise and host research-based effective training sessions for peer mentors.

    + Promote the CEAS Peer Mentor program by hosting information sessions, attending fairs and addressing inquiries via phone and email.

    + Work collaboratively with the Lead Coordinator of Student Engagement to evaluate prospective mentee applicants, matching mentors and mentees.

    + Evaluate mentors’ progress towards meeting learning objectives and support their professional development through holding individual and group meetings.

    + Proactively assess mentor and mentee wellbeing and connect students with appropriate resources.

    + Work collaboratively with the Lead Coordinator of Student Engagement to review program feedback and make recommendations for improvement.

    + Divisional Support:

    + Assist with the planning of large-scale CEAS events and traditions.

    + Participate in various University programs and services as well as those offered by the CEAS Undergraduate Student Office including campus events and special events, Admissions open houses/receptions and Admitted Students events. Some nights and weekends required.

    + Participate in transfer and freshman new student orientations. This includes, but is not limited to, utilizing a strong command of programmatic requirements to make course recommendations for enrollment and evaluating transfer courses.

    + Academic Success Initiatives:

    + Use data to identify areas of need for academic support services. Propose, create and implement initiatives and strategies to address these needs. Such initiatives can include, but are not limited to, recruiting, hiring and training top students to serve as tutors for math, physics and select engineering courses each semester.

    + Draft communication to promote all initiatives to CEAS Departments, campus partners, USO staff and students. Conduct regular evaluation to assess the efficacy of every initiative.

    + Major/Minor Admission:

    + Work with Undergraduate Program Coordinators and Undergraduate Program Directors to update internal review guidelines and documentation on a semesterly basis.

    + Update communication templates and spreadsheets on a semesterly basis.

    + Train USO staff on CEAS major admission criteria.

    + Evaluate and process applications for admission to CEAS majors and minors on a rolling basis.

    + Serve as the point of contact for campus advisors and non-CEAS students’ questions regarding declaring or changing majors to a CEAS program.

    + Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and department mission.

    Special Notes:

    This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

     

    For this position, we are unable to sponsor candidates for work visas.

     

    In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.

     

    Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
