    Position Description

    The Special Assistant to the Director performs administrative and managerial duties involved in assisting a department director with one or more administrative activities within the department. The incumbent performs related duties as required.

     

    Waste Services is responsible for weekly curbside waste and every other week curbside recycling collection for over 151,000 customers in the urban services district as well as collection of over 200 public litter baskets in the downtown Nashville corridor. The division also operates four convenience centers where residents of Davidson County can bring waste, recycling, bulk items, food waste, household hazardous waste, and other items for recycling or disposal and eight recycling drop-off locations available to residents who do not qualify for curbside recycling collection.

     

    Waste Services currently employs staff members working in collection, administration, customer service, education, landfill engineering, development review, and outreach.

    Typical Duties

    + Performs various administrative duties assisting the Department Head.

    + Consults with the Director or his/her designee on fiscal, personnel and operational matters.

    + Provides the Director or his/her designee with any data that may be helpful in planning and decision making.

    + Serves as liaison between the Director or his/her designee and employees of the department, members of the Council, other Metro agencies, the press and/or the general public.

    + Disseminates, receives and interprets information on behalf of the Director as needed.

    + Prepares reports of a complex or sensitive nature.

    + Conducts special studies related to problems, policies and/or needs of the department and reports findings to the Director or his/her designee.

    + Coordinates activities between divisions.

    + Investigates complaints and recommends/implements solutions.

    + Follows up on complaints and requests to ensure that an expedient and appropriate response is given.

    + Participates in developing and implementing rules, regulations, and procedures for the department.

    + Participates in budget preparation.

    + Participates in management or union meetings and coordinates the investigation of union requests and grievances.

    + Attends various meetings and hearings on behalf of the Director.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of administrative experience.

    Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
