    DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:

    Recreation Services: In Recreation Services, our mission is "to enrich the life of each individual resident and to contribute to the enhancement of Boca Raton as a community by providing exceptional recreational, educational and municipal programs, facilities and sites in a fiscally responsible manner."

     

    Our areas of oversight include Aquatics, Golf, Ocean Rescue, Park Rangers, Tennis, Libraries, Administration, Community Centers, Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, Beautification & Irrigation, Cemetery & Mausoleum, Athletics and Park Maintenance.

     

    As a College Student Intern with Recreation Services, you’ll work closely with the Racquet Sports Sections well as internal stakeholders to learning daily operations, program preparation, and neighboring cities best practices. In this position you’ll learn what it means to provide public service through Recreation operations.

    Essential Functions

    + Assist in the preparation and organization of events at Tennis Center.

    + Maintains court areas, including rolling/brushing and lining clay courts, and use water removal equipment;

    + Assists Tennis Center Patrons; receives visitors and processes minor transactions as needed

    + Prepares promotional material; creates flyers, invitations, brochures and press releases.

    + Use a computer and variety of standard and automated office equipment;

    + Act as receptionist, answers telephone inquiries about routine programs, procedures and policies, relays and dispatches messages as required;

    + Prepares and completes daily and monthly participation report.

    + Compile area research on neighboring city recreation operations including their fees, programming offered, software in use, and other operational information.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Knowledge of:

    + Standard modern office practices and procedure

    + General knowledge of Tennis and Tennis Center operations

    + Best practices for public relations and communication techniques

    Skilled in:

    + Communication – both oral and written

    + Writing Composition - write professional and effective letters, memos, emails, reports, and supporting documentation.

    + Critical thinking – using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.

    + Microsoft Office Suite products to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, to a moderate degree of proficiency.

    Ability to:

    + Operate cash register and make simple arithmetical calculations

    + Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, patrons, and the general public

    + Follow oral and written instructions, assists tennis center patrons; receives visitors and processes minor transactions as needed

    + Prioritize tasks, and incorporate adequate time management

    + Conduct themselves in a professional manner

    + Maintain the confidentiality of any information obtained through the Internship Program.

     

    Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

    Program Term:

    Internships will have a prescribed beginning and end date but may be extended at the discretion of the Human Resources Director or designee. Program length will depend on the Division's budget, needs and staff levels.

     

    Interns must be available to work a minimum of 16 hours per week, hours are flexible and may include weekend shifts. The scheduled hours will not be permitted to conflict with ongoing college classes.

    Available positions

    The Recreation Services department currently has one (1) internship available.

    In addition to the general eligibility requirements, candidates seeking to be considered for an Internship in Recreation Services must meet or comply with the following requirements:

    MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    + The student must be participating in a college/university sanctioned internship. College Credits are usually awarded by the school.

    + The student must be majoring in Parks & Recreation, Leisure Services, Horticulture, Landscape, Turf Management, Library Science or a course of study related to services provided by the Recreation Services Department, such as Marine Biology.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    In additions to general eligibility information, candidates seeking to be considered for an Internship in Recreation Services must meet or comply with the following requirements:

    + Currently enrolled in, or will be entering enrollment, at an accredited College or University as a full or part-time student.

    + Must be authorized to work in the U.S

    EXPECTATIONS:

    Candidates selected for an internship will be expected to comply with all City and Department rules and regulations. In addition, candidates will be expected to:

     

    + Represent the City and your college/university in a professional light.

    + Share with City staff knowledge, trends and ideas that you have learned in your curriculum.

    + Offer your thoughts regarding existing City operations and services, as seen through a fresh set of eyes.

    + Be punctual and reliable.

    + Deal with City staff and the public in a courteous and cordial fashion.

    + Maintain a neat and professional appearance. If applicable, comply with City uniform/clothing guidelines.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    + Completed junior year of undergraduate studies by June 2024, with an anticipated graduation by end of 2025.

    + Preference will be given to those candidates with previous experience in sports/athletics OR with those candidates working towards a bachelors/master's degree in recreation, sports management, physical education, or public administration.

    Requirements (to be submitted with application):

    + 500-Word Essay with application - "Why I want to Intern at the City of Boca Raton" including details about your education, experience, or interest in Recreation Services management and operations.

    + Unofficial transcript from state accredited college or university in which you are currently enrolled.

    CITY OF BOCA RATON - BENEFITS SUMMARY

    Part-Time Employees

     

    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: To be eligible to receive Paid Leave and to contribute to the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, a part-time employee must have worked at least 1,040 hours in the prior fiscal year

     

    PAID LEAVE: Employees who work a minimum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year will receive twelve (12) hours of Paid Leave on October 1st. This Paid Leave shall be used no later than September 30th of that fiscal year or it will be forfeited. These hours may not accumulate and may only be granted with the approval of the employee's supervisor. This paid leave has no cash value at separation of employment.

     

    MISSION SQUARE 457 DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN: Employees who work a minimum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year will be allowed to participate in the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. The City will not provide any matching funds.
