Job Title: Shipfitter
Job Description
As a Shipfitter, you will lay out and fabricate metal structural parts such as plates, bulkheads, frames, and braces within the hull of a ship for riveting or welding. You will work from blueprints or templates, using scribe and hand tools to locate and mark reference lines like center, buttock, and frame lines. Your role will include positioning parts within the ship hull, aligning them using tools such as jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls. You will mark the location of holes to be drilled, install temporary fasteners, and install packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members like doors, hatches, brackets, and clips. The role may also involve preparing molds and templates for nonstandard parts, tack welding clips and brackets, and rolling, bending, flanging, cutting, and shaping plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts.
Responsibilities
+ Lay out and fabricate metal structural parts within the hull of a ship.
+ Position and align parts using tools such as jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls.
+ Mark reference lines and the location of holes to be drilled.
+ Install packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories.
+ Prepare molds and templates for nonstandard parts.
+ Tack weld clips and brackets prior to permanent welding.
+ Roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape heavy metal parts.
Essential Skills
+ Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Shipfitter.
+ Ability to read and work from blueprints.
+ Proficiency in using hand tools and equipment such as torches and plasma cutters.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ 1st class requires 7 years as a marine electrician with a stable job history.
+ 2nd class requires 3-4 years of experience.
+ Ability to read and interpret drawings and blueprints.

Work Environment
Work within a naval base, requiring DBIDS working access. Use a range of tools provided, including framing squares, hammers, vice grips, and safety equipment. Embrace a hands-on role, adhering to safety protocols and wearing protective gear such as hard hats, safety glasses, monoglasses, face shields, work gloves, and steel toe shoes.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Norfolk, Virginia.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $25.00/hr.
