Job Title: Outside Machinist Diesel Mechanic
Job Description
As an Outside Machinist Diesel Mechanic, you will play a crucial role in conducting diesel engine repairs, rebuilds, and overhauls, as well as working on large mechanical systems and heavy equipment. Your expertise will ensure the proper functioning and safety of various machinery and equipment.
Responsibilities
+ Conduct repairs, rebuilds, and overhauls of diesel engines and other types of engines.
+ Assist in tearing down, repairing, replacing, and installing reduction gears.
+ Work on large mechanical systems and heavy equipment, including staging equipment and material, bolting up equipment, and installing machinery.
+ Assist in replacing the Stern Gate and repairing the Steering Ram.
+ Conduct generator repairs, rebuilds, and overhauls as needed.
+ Repair deck equipment and deck machinery as required.
+ Analyze jobs from start to finish to ensure proper and safe work methods.
+ Read and interpret work specifications, blueprints, technical manuals, and design sketches.
+ Assemble, repair, and fabricate metal parts using mechanical equipment such as hand tools, calipers, micrometers, lathes, boring mills, planers, shapers, slotters, and milling machines.
+ Assemble parts into sub-units or complete units.
+ Potentially install ship machinery, including propelling machinery, auxiliary motors, pumps, ventilating equipment, and steering gears.
+ Test and inspect installed machinery and equipment during dock and sea trials.
+ Assist, guide, and demonstrate good marine practices.
+ Identify and troubleshoot mechanical problems and report to the supervisor.
Essential Skills
+ At least three years of Outside Machinist experience.
+ Diesel repair experience.
+ Ability to carry out written or oral instructions.
+ Proficiency in operating precision tools, drill presses, and grinders.
+ Ability to interpret blueprints and design sketches.
+ Effective teamwork skills.
+ Reliability and consistency in work.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ High school diploma or equivalent.
+ Experience as a first or second class machinist, including skills in assembly, disassembly, repair, and overhaul.
+ Experience with pumps and valves.

Work Environment
Work at a naval base where you must be able to obtain DBIDS clearance. The role involves working with various technologies and equipment in a dynamic and secure environment.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Norfolk, Virginia.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $25.00/hr.
