    CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

    Student Health Services (SHS) is the primary student health unit on the University of Delaware Campus. Situated within the Division of Student Life, SHS provides essential services and support to students and campus stakeholders to enhance the development of personal and social responsibility and to foster safe, healthy, inclusive, and supportive communities at UD. SHS partners with students and staff to encourage student success and engagement, a culture of care for all members, values-congruent decision-making, and the cultivation of skills and knowledge so students may become citizens and leaders in our increasingly global society. Staff members support the Mission and Vision of Student Health Services as well as those of the Division of Student Life to ensure student success.

     

    Under the general direction of SHS primary care providers, the Nurse I provides and coordinates comprehensive primary care and services to the student population. The Nurse I operates in a clinical setting, assesses patient and associated needs, implements intervention plans, and evaluates response. The Nurse I collaborates with other health care team members and/or community services, as appropriate. This position will provide experience and growth potential to serve additional nursing roles.

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

    + Participates in and completes orientation alongside an experienced nurse, tailored to support the transition into this entry-level role.

    + Obtains health histories and performs brief physical assessments on a selected patient population, including acute/chronic medical problems, as per provider-approved protocol.

    + Utilizes the Electronic Medical Record for scheduling appointments, charting encounters and any other documentation regarding the care of the patient.

    + Reviews medical records including laboratory results and immunizations and consults with the primary care provider, as appropriate.

    + Provides patient education and instructions within area of specialty to patients, families, health care staff, faculty and students.

    + Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.

    + Maintains supplies in areas of work, i.e., exam rooms and the procedure room.

    + Evaluates equipment readiness, such as EKG machine, nebulizer, pulse oximeter, vitals machines, glucometer, crash carts and contents and other items as needed.

    + Participates in clinical quality improvement studies as directed by supervisor.

    + Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, annual mandatory training, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.

    + Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    + State of Delaware Licensed Registered Nurse (or RN licensed in a compact state), and a graduate nurse or a nurse with up to three years of nursing experience.

    + Ability to react effectively in emergency situations.

    + Knowledge of patient evaluation, CPR, patient care charts and patient histories, drugs and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, and proper administration and primary care principles and practices.

    + Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.

    + Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community and rapidly changing technical environment.

    + Commitment to fostering a workplace culture of belonging, where diversity is celebrated, and equity is a core value.

    + Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

    + Ability to organize, prioritize, and schedule work assignments and make administrative and procedural decisions.

    + Ability to maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards.

    + Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures, JCAHO or AAAHC accreditation and certification requirements and standards.

    + Must maintain professional competence through participation in ongoing educational programs with other members of the health team and with other departments of the University and the community.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

    + Ability to lift average weight objects up to 50 pounds.

    + Ability to stand and/or walk for more than four (4) hours per day.

    + Yearly tuberculosis screening. If positive, proof of absence of disease.

    + Documentation of immune status to Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Tdap, and Hepatitis B.

    + Successful completion of criminal background check.

     

    Note:Related clinical experience as listed in the ANCC generalist certification are medical-surgical, community health, school nurse or outpatient office.
