WORK ENVIRONMENT
Maintenance Helpers provide a wide range of services in support of the Facility Services Department. These services include, but are not limited to:
+ Manual labor
+ Landscaping and grounds maintenance
+ Floor care and maintenance
+ Interior and exterior painting
+ Snow and ice mitigation (including on-call snow removal)
+ Hospice bed pickup and delivery
This position requires the use of both hand and power tools, and the safe operation of hospital-owned vehicles—including those with manual transmissions. Tasks vary depending on assigned duties or areas of focus and may include:
Landscape and Groundskeeping
+ Mowing, trimming, watering, fertilizing
+ Digging, raking, leaf and debris removal
+ Irrigation system maintenance for lawns and ornamental plants
Floor Care
+ Waxing, shampooing, buffing, vacuuming, and general floor maintenance
Painting and Surface Care
+ Interior and exterior painting, staining, varnishing
+ Rolling, spraying, taping, and surface preparation
Support Activities
+ Biohazardous waste disposal
+ Snow removal using snowplows, blowers, shovels, and ice melt spreaders
+ Hospice bed delivery and pickup
Maintenance Helpers are required to participate in a seasonal, on-call rotation for snow mitigation to help ensure the safety of the facility.
QUALIFICATIONS
To successfully perform this role, individuals must be able to carry out all essential duties satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the necessary knowledge, skills, and/or abilities:
Education and Experience
+ High school diploma or GED required
+ Experience in groundskeeping and floor maintenance preferred
+ Proficiency in operating manual transmission vehicles required
+ Willingness to learn and develop skills in all required areas of the role
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TASKS
While individuals may specialize in two or more key areas, all Maintenance Helpers are expected to have a basic understanding of the following tasks:
+ Maintain grounds through regular mowing, weeding, trimming, and edging near flowerbeds, walkways, and buildings
+ Apply fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides using hand or automatic sprayers
+ Maintain and troubleshoot irrigation systems, including seasonal startup and winterization
+ Avoid water waste by preventing irrigation runoff onto buildings, vehicles, or paved surfaces
+ Assist custodians and floor technicians with biohazard waste processing and floor care projects
+ Keep walkways, entrances, and parking areas safe and clear of hazards
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may be subject to varying weather conditions. Shifts may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays to support the 24/7 operation of a Critical Access Hospital.
Duties may involve:
+ Working in confined spaces
+ Frequent lifting, kneeling, and standing
+ Walking on uneven surfaces
+ Overhead reaching and climbing (e.g., ladders, attic or roof hatches, scaffolding)
