    Job Description Summary

    Anatomy Lab Teaching Assistants (TA) support laboratory operations and assist OMSI students and faculty in the anatomy lab. This position is perfect for students seeking to gain additional hands-on experience in a laboratory environment and to expand their knowledge of human anatomy.

     

    Fall Responsibilities and Expectations: The average weekly time commitment is approximately 5 hours, fluctuating based on the anatomy lab course schedule and practical exam dates. In addition to supporting lab sessions, TA’s are expected to attend review sessions, practical exams, and required meetings. An optional opportunity to assist with prosection preparation may be available during the summer.

     

    Summer Boot Camp Responsibilities and Expectations: This is a full-time commitment during the boot camp, generally occurring Monday through Friday during standard full-day hours. Additionally, TAs may be required for pre-boot camp preparation and should anticipate potential responsibilities outside of regular hours and on weekends during the program.

    Essential Functions

    + Actively promote the mission and values of the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM) to faculty, staff, students, and the broader community.

    + Assist in the efficient setup and meticulous cleanup of all anatomy lab materials, including cadaveric specimens, anatomical models, and equipment, ensuring a safe and organized learning environment.

    + Skillfully prepare cadaveric specimens through dissection or arrange anatomical models for effective instructional use by students and faculty.

    + Strictly adhere to and enforce all laboratory safety protocols, including the proper handling, storage, and disposal of specimens and hazardous materials, ensuring a safe learning environment for all.

    + Provide direct support to OMS I students during anatomy lab sessions by offering guidance through dissections, assisting in the identification of anatomical structures, and fostering their understanding of human anatomy.

    + Support anatomy faculty and lab instructors by assisting with demonstrations, preparing specimens and materials for instruction, and contributing to other instructional activities as needed.

    + Proctor practical examinations to ensure a fair and secure testing environment. Conduct thorough and helpful review sessions to reinforce student learning.

    + Aid in the preparation of prosected specimens for teaching purposes. Participate in the comprehensive end-of-course laboratory cleanup and contribute to other essential laboratory duties as assigned to maintain an optimal learning environment.

    + Performs other duties as requested by primary manager that do not compromise moral code of conduct or protocols set in place for patient or employee safety

    Qualifications

    Minimum Experience Required

     

    + Successful completion of the OMSI curriculum.

    + Current full-time enrollment as a medical student at the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM).

    + Must be in good academic standing, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

    + Possess effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact professionally with others.

    + Must have successfully completed the OMSI curriculum.

    + Must be comfortable handling anatomical specimens, including cadaveric materials (if applicable).

    + Ability to work both autonomously and as a contributing member of a team involving students, faculty, and staff.

    + Demonstrate sound judgment and a proactive approach to following directions from Anatomy faculty and staff.

    + Demonstrate a strong commitment to all compliance requirements and anatomy laboratory safety protocols.

    + Previous laboratory experience is an advantage but not required.
