Job Description Summary
The Safety and Security Manager is responsible for directing security staff, managing daily operations, participating in performance evaluations, and conducting necessary training. The role also involves routine campus safety inspections, developing and adjusting safety procedures, responding to and investigating incidents, maintaining thorough records and activity logs, and monitoring all security systems. Furthermore, the Manager provides safety training for students, faculty, and staff, offers leadership support at campus events, attends assigned meetings, and performs other related duties, while adhering to safety-related drug and alcohol testing requirements.
Job Description
Essential Functions
+ Oversees the day-to-day activities of security personnel, including assigning tasks, managing work schedules, and ensuring efficient workflow to maintain a safe and secure environment.
+ Contributes to the assessment of security officers' job performance by providing input and observations to help ensure professional and effective service delivery.
+ Creates and conducts comprehensive training programs for new security hires to onboard them effectively, as well as ongoing training for existing staff to enhance their skills and knowledge of security protocols and procedures.
+ Performs routine inspections of campus buildings and grounds to identify potential safety hazards, security vulnerabilities, and ensure compliance with established regulations.
+ Creates new safety and security protocols and updates existing ones based on best practices, risk assessments, and evolving needs, submitting them to the Director of Campus Safety for review and approval.
+ Addresses calls for service from students, faculty, and staff, providing support, information, and appropriate intervention in various security-related situations.
+ Takes charge of inquiries into reported incidents, accidents, and potential criminal activities on campus, gathering information, interviewing involved parties, and documenting findings.
+ Ensures the proper organization, storage, and confidentiality of all records related to accidents, incidents, and investigations, adhering to legal and institutional guidelines.
+ Verifies that security personnel are meticulously documenting their activities, observations, and any incidents that occur during their shifts, ensuring a comprehensive record of daily events.
+ Continuously observes and manages various security technologies, including alarm systems, access control systems, and video surveillance, responding appropriately to alerts and ensuring their proper functionality.
+ Develops and delivers educational sessions for the campus community on topics such as personal safety, security awareness, and emergency response procedures to foster a culture of preparedness.
+ Assists the Director of Campus Safety in providing leadership and guidance for security operations at both small and large campus events, and/or acts as the designated leader to ensure the safety and security of attendees.
+ Participates in various meetings related to safety, security, and campus operations, and may be responsible for leading specific meetings or discussions as directed.
+ Performs other duties as requested by primary manager that do not compromise moral code of conduct or protocols set in place for patient or employee safety

Qualifications
Minimum Education Required
+ High school diploma or equivalent
Minimum Education Preferred
+ Bachelor's or graduate-level degree in Criminal Justice, Security Management, or a related field.
+ Professional security certifications such as CPP (Certified Protection Professional), PSP (Physical Security Professional), or PCI (Professional Certified Investigator).
+ Advanced First Aid and CPR certification.
+ Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) or similar de-escalation training certification.
+ Completion of relevant FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) courses (e.g., IS-100, IS-200, IS-700).
Minimum Experience Required
+ Five (5) years of experience in law enforcement, safety, and/or security required; equivalent combination of education and experience considered.
+ Must possess and maintain a valid state-issued driver's license.
Minimum Experience Preferred
+ Prior experience in a supervisory or leadership role within a security, law enforcement, or safety environment
+ Prior experience working in a campus security setting or a similar environment with a diverse population
+ Experience conducting investigations related to incidents, accidents, and potential criminal activity
+ Prior experience developing and delivering safety and security training programs
+ Experience managing and troubleshooting security technology such as access control and video surveillance systems
Required Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities
+ Must be eligible for coverage under the organization's vehicle insurance policy to operate buses and other vehicles (including golf carts)
+ Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely including the safe operation of off-road vehicles
+ Ability to pass a comprehensive background check
+ Demonstrated knowledge of investigative procedures, violence de-escalation techniques, and campus operational protocols.
+ Understanding of best practices in safety operations and relevant regulatory compliance.
+ Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
+ Ability to collaborate effectively with local public safety personnel across various campus settings.
+ Strong interpersonal skills, demonstrating tact, patience, and courtesy in all interactions.
+ Detail-oriented with a keen sense of observation.
+ Ability to think critically and logically, exercise sound judgment, and make swift, rational decisions during emergencies.
+ Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and maintain its security.
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or similar productivity software.
+ Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
+ Capacity to identify suspicious, impaired, or other concerning behaviors.
+ Ability to prepare thorough and accurate investigative and incident reports.

+ Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
+ Knowledge of NIMS/IMS/ICS with certificates in ICS 100, ICS 200, ICS 700, ICS 800, with ICS 300 and ICS 400 a plus.
+ Knowledge of Code of Alabama 1975 Title 13
+ Knowledge of Constitutional law
+ Knowledge of private security and law enforcement operations and emergency response
+ Knowledge of OSHA, NIOSH, EPA, HAZMAT, DOT requirements
+ Knowledge of FERPA and Title IX
