Job Description

The Finance Department is actively seeking a Claims Assistant.
Did you know as a City of Jacksonville employee, you would also have twelve (12) paid holidays and a personal leave day as well? This is administrative support work in coordinating, monitoring, and facilitating administrative actions and processes for the Risk Management Division of the Finance Department. The work requires knowledge of the techniques, methods, and procedures used in the processing of property, casualty, or workers’ compensation claims which involves the use of specialized skills, which is acquired through a combination of training and considerable on the job experience. May include overseeing and monitoring the work of others. Contacts with others require skills in understanding and/or influencing people and are important in providing client services, including skills of persuasiveness, assertiveness, and sensitivity to others point of view that are required to influence behavior, change an opinion, or turn a situation around. The work is semi-routine in that tasks are covered by procedures or precedents, but some latitude is permitted to consider the most appropriate method, technique, or procedure to follow. The work involves differing situations requiring use of judgment in search for solutions or new applications within ones' known experiences. The work is performed in an office environment. The physical demands consist mainly of moving from one work location to another, sitting, or standing at a workstation for extended periods of time, and, dependent upon assigned work location, may be required to lift objects weighing up to 15 pounds. Operates motor vehicles and standard office equipment such as personal computers. The work is performed under general supervision where work assignments are varied and, although subject to standard practices and procedures, the worker is permitted some latitude to set own priorities subject to superior's approval.
Examples of Work
+ Reviews and analyzes legal and financial exposures for insurance claims.
+ Approves settlements and makes recommendations on decisions determining settlements, settlement values, and amount of payments or denial of claims utilizing knowledge of local, state, and federal laws within authority level.
+ Reviews local, state, and federal statutes as they apply to a particular claim.
+ Researches and compiles data, prepares reports and correspondence.
+ Prepares claim budgets, monitors expenditures, and purchases materials.
+ Coordinates and monitors administrative matters such as tracking of legislation, processing of applications or case records, responding to complaints, or resolving work related problems.
+ Recommends, coordinates, and implements administrative practices and procedures to facilitate work processes and accomplish unit activities.
+ Interprets laws, rules, regulations, policies, for the purpose of answering inquiries, resolving complaints, or to resolve work related problems.
+ Prepares correspondence relating to administrative activities for the purpose of presenting information or resolving complaints or work-related problems.
+ Maintains administrative records and files.
+ Monitors or reviews the work of others.
+ Attends meetings to provide or clarify information, facilitate processes, resolve problems, or to represent superiors in important administrative matters.
+ Operates a motor vehicle.
+ Operates standard office equipment such as personal computers using word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and other related software and peripheral and electronic devices, copiers, scanners, fax machines, and calculators .
+ Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville’s competencies.

Open Requirements/Supplemental Information
OPEN REQUIREMENTS:
+ Two years of education and/or experience in an insurance claims administration environment.
+ Associate or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in Risk Management, Public Administration or Business Administration is preferred.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
+ Florida Workers' Compensation Adjuster License (WC) or All Lines Claims Adjuster License (General Liability) must be obtained during the six month probationary period and must be maintained during employment in this class.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
+ The probationary period for this classification is six months.
