This is an internal recruitment only for current qualified classified City of Reno Employees
The ideal candidate in this position will take the lead in managing, coordinating, and performing complex repairs and overhauls of City vehicles and equipment. This includes working with both gasoline and diesel-powered machinery, as well as heavy and light construction and other power-driven equipment. Responsibilities will include inspecting, diagnosing, overhauling, repairing, and adjusting engines, transmissions, and related vehicle systems. The individual will also be responsible for maintaining various records and reports and carrying out a range of technical tasks related to their assigned duties.
We currently have one vacancy in the Maintenance and Operations Department in which hiring will begin immediately following the close of this recruitment. This recruitment will also establish a list for future vacancies, which will be filled as they occur.

Examples of Essential Functions
+ Lead, plan, train, review, and perform the work for maintaining, repairing, and overhauling gasoline and diesel-powered, heavy and light construction and other power-driven equipment.
+ Plan, direct, and participate in all aspects of mechanical maintenance and repair work including troubleshooting and repairing complex mechanical problems.
+ Train assigned employees in their areas of work including proper mechanical maintenance and repair of work, and safety methods, procedures, and techniques.
+ Supervise the use, care, and operation of a variety of mechanical repair equipment including, but not limited to, a machine lathe, grinders, voltage meters, and welding equipment.
+ Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
+ Inspect, diagnose, and repair a variety of City equipment and vehicles including, but not limited to, sewer and storm drain equipment, police vehicles, and parks equipment.
+ Work with supervisors and managers to complete specialized repairs and projects as necessary.
+ Diagnose, maintain, and repair electrical system components, ignition systems, alternators, high-voltage power generators, and starters.
+ Diagnose, maintain, repair, and recondition hydraulic systems, front and rear drive axles, drive train components, belts, gears, and chain drives.
+ Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment.
+ Tune up engines by replacing ignition parts and reconditioning and adjusting carburetors, throttle bodies, port fuel injection systems, and propane fuel systems; repair and maintain emission control systems.
+ Repair, adjust, and replace brake systems including wheel cylinders, master cylinders, disc pads, machine drums and rotors, and hydraulic and air brakes.
+ Investigate, measure, and collect data on projects that require specialized tools to complete fabricated, weld, and assemble parts and equipment for City automotive and heavy equipment; fabricate and modify tools as needed.
+ Maintain an accurate inventory of parts for maintenance and emergency repairs; assist in the purchasing of equipment maintenance parts and materials; contact vendors and suppliers to obtain parts and materials as needed.
+ Maintain and repair automated fuel system.
+ Operate the service counter in the absence of the service writer/senior service writer.
+ Oversee the maintenance and cleanliness of the shop and surrounding work area; dispose of waste, oils, and chemicals according to established safety procedures and guidelines.
+ Maintain and update records of preventive maintenance on assigned vehicles; input information into the computer; prepare statistical maintenance reports as necessary.
+ Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
+ Estimate time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required; distribute parts as necessary.
+ Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application.
Combinations of relevant work experience and education that are equivalent to the following are acceptable.*
Education:
+ Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in automotive maintenance and mechanical repairs.
Experience:
+ Five years of experience in the maintenance and mechanical repair of a variety of vehicles and equipment as a journey level equipment mechanic and including some lead supervisory responsibility.
License or Certificate:
+ Possession of a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements.
+ Possession of an ASE certification is desirable.

Examination Process:
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and pass the examination for this position to be eligible for hire. The examination will consist of online assessments which include a Cognitive Abilities Test and an Employee Personality Profile; along with a Training and Experience evaluation (T&E) weighted as follows:
Training & Experience Evaluation (T&E) = 70%
Cognitive Abilities Test = 30%

Employee/Veteran Preference in the Event of Tie Scores:

Appointment and Certification:
Appointments to positions in the City's Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.
