POSITION SUMMARY:
The Sterile Processing Education Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the education, certification, on-going education, and re-certification assistance for all Sterile Processing Technicians. The Sterile Processing Education Coordinator will ensure that the Sterile Processing team is operating within the guidelines set forth by Infection Control, The Joint Commission, OSHA, AAMI and AORN. Provides leadership and expertise to team members in the absence of Management. Communicates efficiently with staff. Reports to the Sterile Processing Manager
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
+ High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
+ Certification in Sterile Processing through a nationally accredited central service organization such as CBSPD or HSP (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) is required.
EXPERIENCE:
+ Minimum five (5) years’ experience in Sterile Processing, including experience as a trainer or educator.
COMPENTENCIES:
+ Requires advanced and demonstrated knowledge and understanding of sterile processing principles.
+ Must be able to solve problems by utilizing excellent communication skills in potentially stressful situations.
+ Must be able to read, write, and speak clearly using the English language.
+ Computer knowledge and basic use of computer skills required.
+ Must have excellent knowledge of instrument tracking systems.
+ Basic knowledge of AMMI and AORN standards.
+ Excellent organizational skills.
+ Ability to work independently, self-motivate and motivate others.
+ Ability to effectively educate adult learners.
+ Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
+ Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as outlined in the Environment of Care Safety Policies and Procedures #110, maintain a driving record free of any violations and pass a safe driving educational program upon hire and annually thereafter.
+ Ability to occasionally work a flexible schedule Monday – Friday, based on training needs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Assists in developing yearly departmental goals and documents progress quarterly.
+ Assists Management in establishing a yearly performance improvement plan and reports monthly progress.
+ Develops and implements an education program designed to assist Technician I staff in preparation for the certification exam through CBSPD or HSP.
+ Develops and conducts continuing education for the team based on needs identified and to provide standardized information.
+ Assist Manager with developing yearly department goals and helps to monitor progress to meet the goals.
+ Ensures resources are available to meet requirements for certification. Obtains applicable reference materials.
+ Orients new hires and temporary staff following the training plan and required documentation.
+ Randomly evaluates and documents staff compliance as it pertains to departmental technical and safety policies and procedures.
+ Assists the Manager with auditing staff for the purpose of achieving and maintaining the yearly Departmental skill competencies.
+ Maintains knowledge of Sterile Processing standards, techniques, instrumentation, and equipment utilizing educational websites and acts as a resource to the team.
+ Assists in the implementation and in-servicing the team on new technologies, equipment that is used in Sterile Processing, as well as new instrumentation used for many types of surgical procedures.
+ Assists the Technician II team members with recertification requirements.
+ Creates and maintains an educational timeline for staff to ensure annual education is complete.
+ Ensures staff is current on CEU requirements on a quarterly basis and follows up with Melinda on non-compliant findings.
+ Assist Management in reviewing and updating departmental policies and procedures.
+ Leads a minimum of one in-service for the OR staff annually.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
+ Educates staff on regulatory readiness and speaking points quarterly.
