Grocery Manager
Directly Supervises: Assistant Manager, Team Leaders, (Indirectly 21-43 Team Members)
FLSA Status: Exempt
Full Time- Salary Range: $75,056-$85,000 /year depending on qualifications and experience
Job Summary:
Stew Leonard’s is seeking an experienced, driven, and customer-focused Grocery Manager to lead and oversee our high-volume Grocery Department, which generates between $25M–$34M in annual sales. In this role, you will be responsible for the department’s sales, gross profit, operations, product selection, merchandising, team development, and customer satisfaction. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with a passion for people, products, and performance.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Utilize “The Round-Up” to make informed and insightful decisions
+ Review daily sales
+ Responsible for weekly store floor moves due to sales.
+ Schedule vendor demos weekly.
+ Product knowledge both dairy and dry goods.
+ Organize and conduct one idea trips
+ Create weekly sale items for flyer.
+ Identify and develop new products and trends.
+ Merchandising of product through signs, packaging, show & sell.
+ Creating our own signs for merchandise.
+ Motivate and support Team Members by parties and appreciation.
+ Ordering product.
+ Set retail pricing and price surveys locally.
+ Maintain price book and make any necessary changes.
+ Ensure proper labeled/dated product.
+ Review all “top 20’s” and “hit list” year-round.
+ Rotation of all products on floor and warehouse.
+ Work with demo manager and provide high sales and gross profit items for demos.
+ Equipment knowledge and maintenance.
+ Attend all department bash meetings and strategy meetings and accomplish all agreed goals.
+ Holiday planning/strategies
+ Review returns and customer comments and act on them.
+ Handle customer complaints.
+ Comply with all health code regulations.
+ Comply with all safety procedures.
+ Hire, coach, develop, and motivate the Grocery Team
+ Labor management.
+ Communication meetings.
+ Performance reviews- Annual and Chats and 90 days reviews
+ Keep item count under a certain goal.
+ Monitor returned items and examine reason it was returned.
Gross Profit
+ Conduct monthly price surveys/review competitors’ ads and react as needed to remain competitive
+ Find and react to “buy-ins” for profitability
+ Control inventory levels to ensure turnover and less waste
+ Knowledge of hourly and daily sales.
+ Weekly Inventory
+ Evaluate merchandising opportunities daily to maximize GP
+ Review open-key to ensure proper ringing and speedy customer service
Labor
+ Review daily punches
+ Write weekly schedules
+ React to sales trends vs. labor
+ Transfer hours for Team members
Expenses
+ Review all monthly financial results and look for opportunities.
+ Conduct monthly inventory
+ Waste control
+ Monitor transfers between departments and stores
+ Reporting items to big foot when needed.
Vendor Shows and Food Shows – identify and bring back new products
+ Bozzutos
+ Fancy Food Show
+ Candy Show
+ Toy Show
+ UNFI Shows
Education and Experience:
+ HS diploma plus 5 – 10 years of experience; Associates Degree preferred
+ Above average math and computer skills
+ Great negotiating and purchasing skills
+ Merchandising ability
+ Ability to delegate, prioritize and juggle many tasks
+ Great communication skills
+ Organizational skills
