    This work is related to the maintenance repair and construction of State-owned bridges, culverts and pipes within Division 14. This position is technical in nature and labor intensive. Employee will be required to work in diverse working environments in all types of weather conditions. The recommended applicant will work in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment, and with power tools. The recommended applicant must be able to work in a close team environment or independently, as needed. .

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

    Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

    + Experience in bridge maintenance and repair, as well as, bridge maintenance equipment operation

    + Experience reading and interpreting plans, calculating quantities and placing orders, plan reading and layout, directing drilling and cutting of holes, directing erection of steel beams and bridge components

    + Experience in Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Policy and Practices

    + Experience inspecting bridges for minor maintenance repair

    Additional Expectations:

    This level will serve as a Senior Lead Worker. Work requires advanced level skills in a variety of functional areas including: equipment operation, pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, contract inspect, repair of culverts, bridges, large pipe, bulkheads and pile clusters, sandblasting/painting, demolition work, welding, structure inspect, trenching/ shoring, lead paint removal, steel fabrication and steel beam repair, installation and maintenance of erosion control. Must be willing to attend training and continuing education classes to keep up to date on all state/federal regulations and maintain certifications in all required areas (i.e.: traffic control and environmental stewardship) Operate a motor vehicle, have a valid NC Driver s License and safely be able to lift /carry 50 lbs. Pre-employment drug screen is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear meeting ASTM F2412-05 and Class "A" CDL will be required for employment.

     

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.

     

    The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date.
