Job Summary
The Postdoctoral Associate will focus on improving the performance of quantum circuits. This may include investigating new materials and fabrication processes, as well as diagnosing the source and/or properties of microscopic two-level system defects that are reducing the performance of quantum circuits. The goal is to experimentally test systems fabricated with different materials and designs in order to identify, reduce, or eliminate the influence of two-level system defects and/or elevated levels of quasiparticle poisoning within the quantum circuits. In addition, the research may involve working to isolate the two-level defects so that they could become useful quantum bits. The position tasks include developing designs, layout, and the fabrication of quantum circuits, as well as developing theoretical and computational tools for operating and modelling the performance of quantum circuits. The position will include research into novel circuit measurements, calibration techniques, and developing critical circuit operations for identifying and controlling defects, coherence loss, and improving qubit operations. Results will be supported by data analysis and prepared for publication in public domain scientific journals and/or disseminated at scientific conferences.
This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) Professional Research Experience Program (PREP). NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration. CU is an Equal Opportunity Employer and complies with all applicable federal, state, and local laws governing nondiscrimination in employment. We are committed to creating a workplace where all individuals are treated with respect and dignity, and we encourage individuals from all backgrounds to apply, including protected veterans and individuals with disabilities.
Who We Are
PREP is a special partnership between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Colorado Boulder. PREP provides research opportunities to CU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in NIST labs to gain research experience alongside NIST scientists.
The particular group that needs a researcher is the Advanced Microwave Photonics Group under the Applied Physics Division at NIST.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
+ Fabricate and test superconducting quantum circuits.
+ Characterize operation of quantum circuits.
+ Develop new strategies for circuit operation that identify and control defects in quantum bits.
+ Develop new strategies for characterization, measurement, and control of defects in quantum bits.
+ Analyze and publish research findings.
+ Present results at internal/external meetings and international conferences.
