Equine Lecturer & Equestrian Team Coach

Position Description:

The Department of Animal and Food Sciences and Davis College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, is seeking applicants for a full-time, 9-month Equestrian Team Coach and Equine Lecturer in a non-tenure track position (100% teaching appointment) to begin September 1, 2025. Teaching responsibilities include instruction in ANSC 3312 Horsemanship I, ANSC 3313 Horsemanship II, coaching the IHSA Western and Hunt Seat Equestrian Teams, with the opportunity to teach other courses of interest which align with department needs. Serving as the Equestrian Team faculty advisor is also expected. The successful candidate is expected to recruit and mentor student members of the Equestrian Team and coordinate all aspects of travel, competitor eligibility, entries, scholarship awards, and finances. Outreach and engagement with internal and external stakeholders are expected.

Major/Essential Functions:

At Texas Tech University, the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer title designates a full-time, non-tenure-acquiring role with primary duties in teaching organized classes and/or instructional labs. In line with TTU’s strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate level.

As an Equine Lecturer and Coach in the Department of Animal and Food Sciences, the successful candidate will be expected to:

+ Work closely with faculty, staff, and students involved in the Texas Tech Equestrian Center and programs

+ Demonstrate expertise in areas of horsemanship, equine care and training, and coaching of IHSA Western and English Teams

+ Demonstrate effective teaching in animal science, specifically horsemanship, through student evaluation, peer review, and self-reflection

+ Advise and manage the Texas Tech Equestrian Team Club and its officers under Student Government Association and departmental requirements

+ Recruit and mentor student members of the Equestrian Team

+ Travel to regional, zone and national competitions with the Equestrian Team

+ Responsible for care of TTU-owned and leased horses in compliance with TTU Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee guidelines and procedures

+ Responsible for maintaining the training of horses for safety and performance

+ Ensure that team members practice good facility stewardship and abide by all Equestrian Center policies and procedures

+ Coordinate all aspects of travel, competitor eligibility, and competitor entries

+ Manage budgets and finances of the Equestrian Team including fundraising and scholarship awarding

+ Represent Texas Tech and the Equestrian Team at fundraisers, equestrian events, and other university-related functions

In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

+ Experience with IHSA as a participant and/or coach.

+ Previous equestrian team coaching experience.

+ Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

+ Evidence of effective teaching which could include student evaluation, peer review, self-reflection statement, delivery of content, curriculum development, and assessment of learning outcomes.

+ Engagement in student extracurricular activities.

The Texas Tech Equestrian Center (TTEC) is a 100-acre teaching, research, and outreach facility that is home of the IHSA Texas Tech Equestrian Team, Horse Judging Team, Ranch Horse Team, Rodeo Team and Therapeutic Riding Teaching and Research Center. The facility offers an indoor arena with seating for approximately 650 people and 10 additional arenas, including an indoor and outdoor arena dedicated for Equestrian Team use. The Center maintains a horse herd of approximately 40 horses primarily used for teaching. The TTEC is located approximately 15 minutes from main campus and contains over 400 stalls on site for events, students, and outside boarders.

Faculty Qualifications:

+ Master of Science in Animal Science, Equine Science, or a related discipline at the time of appointment

+ Valid driver's license and good driving record.

+ A record of Western Horsemanship experience which could include providing or receiving instruction, training, competing, or coaching.

+ A record of Hunt Seat Equitation on the flat and over fences experience which could include providing or receiving instruction, training, competing, or coaching.

+ Provide evidence of advanced horse training knowledge and skills.

+ A record of academic teaching experience. Teaching while as a graduate student will count towards this requirement.
