    Essential functions (job duties):

    Wayne State University Law School seeks an Academic Service Officer II/III. In coordination with the Law School’s Director of Undergraduate and Graduate Legal Programs, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in increasing enrollment, enhancing retention, and ensuring success of all undergraduate and graduate programs offered through the Law School.

     

    Provide academic advising and support to students enrolled in the Law School undergraduate and graduate programs through individual appointments and group advising. Work collaboratively with leadership to ensure that students satisfy degree requirements. Demonstrated commitment to foster student success through mentoring and appreciative advising.

     

    Monitor academic progress of students in the undergraduate and graduate law school programs. Advise enrolled students on academic policies and procedures and degree and program requirements. Must be knowledgeable of campus and law school resources designed to assist students with academic success. Ability to collaborate with other units on campus to provide support for students.

     

    Represent and market the undergraduate and graduate law programs to internal and external constituencies, including current and prospective students, employers, and appropriate associations (e.g. MISHRM). Provide academic advising to prospective undergraduate and graduate law students. Advise potential and current students on admission requirements, degree requirements, and graduation information. Handle student walk-ins, telephone inquiries, and email requests for information regarding non-J.D. programs.

     

    Assist with the application and admission process and organization of new student orientation.

     

    Communicate effectively and accurately academic and nonacademic requirements, policies, and procedures to prospective and admitted students, staff, and faculty.

     

    Collect student data and prepare a variety of accurate reports. Provide data support to the Director and law school leadership as required.

     

    Provide program support and leadership on various projects and law school initiatives.

     

    Work with minimal supervision.

     

    Must be available to work evening and weekend hours as needed and requested.

    Qualifications:

    Master’s degree or J.D. required.

     

    Minimum 1-3 years' experience in higher education in relevant areas; enrollment services, academic advising, curricular planning, student affairs or directly related experience.

     

    Experience with mentoring and establishing rapport with students of all ethnic backgrounds.

     

    Demonstrated excellence in time management and organization skills.

     

    Demonstrated excellence in written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.

     

    Ability to work well with others, with a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and students.

     

    Critical thinking skills and the ability to propose and implement effective solutions to issues and/or problems.

     

    Excellent planning, organizational and time management skills with the ability to multi-task and efficiently prioritize workload.
