    Job Summary

    Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute is currently seeking a highly motivated individual to join the Division of Therapeutics Research and Infectious Disease Epidemiology (TIDE) within Harvard Medical School’s Department of Population Medicine (www.populationmedicine.org) as a Research Fellow. TIDE is the home of several large, complex, multi-institutional research initiatives that support major national public health activities. Our mission is to improve health care delivery and population health in partnership with health plans, delivery systems, and public health agencies.

     

    The Research Fellow will perform research in TIDE’s Research in Informatics, Data Integration and Emerging Technologies (RIDE) portfolio under the guidance of Anjum Khurshid, MD PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Population Medicine. The RIDE Research Fellow will help promote population health research using proprietary Connxus data; they will lead and participate in various biomedical informatics research studies related to public health informatics, data standards and interoperability, community-driven use cases for Health Information Exchange (HIE) data, building reusable data Quality Assurance (QA) infrastructure and processes for HIEs, and real-world applications of Connxus data in patient-centered care. The RIDE Research Fellow will play an important role in exploring innovative and creative research topics, taking responsibility to conduct background research, write and implement research strategies, perform data harmonization and analysis tasks, and composing and editing manuscripts and academic articles. Specific projects will be determined based on the Research Fellow’s background and interests. Additionally, the RIDE Research Fellow will have opportunities to interact with leading biomedical informatics experts and get experience implementing innovative data science projects in real-world settings.

    Job Description

    Key Responsibilities/Duties

    • Leads or participates in pharmacoepidemiologic, comparative effectiveness, or patient-centered outcomes research projects using HIE/Health Data Utility (HDU) data.

    • Participates in the development of grant proposals, research protocols, surveillance plans, and analysis plans.

    • Prepares manuscripts detailing research findings and submits to peer-reviewed journals.

    • Participates in development of new analytic and data-sharing methods.

    • Conduct preliminary data analysis on Connxus’ HIE/HDU data, for use in future proposals and funded projects

    • Use expertise and knowledge of clinical workflows, Electronic Health Record (EHR) data, and clinical terminologies (e.g.: ICD, CPT, SNOMED, LOINC) to conduct data science projects related to improving equitable patient health outcomes

    • Presents research findings within and outside of the department.

    • Works closely with DPM faculty mentor to monitor progress and resolve issues that arise during the course of the research.

    • Other duties and projects as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Doctoral degree, such as an MD, PhD, or ScD, or in final stage of doctoral program in epidemiology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, health services research, or related field.

    • Advanced knowledge of epidemiologic methods and biostatistics.

    • Familiar with statistical software, such as SAS and R.

    • Ability to learn techniques for analyzing complex electronic healthcare data.

    • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.

    • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.

    • Ability to meet deadlines and work within budgets.

    Working Conditions and Additional Requirements:

    • Must be able to work under normal office conditions and work from home as required.

    • Work may require simultaneous use of a telephone/headset and PC/keyboard and sitting for extended durations.

    • May be required to work additional hours beyond standard work schedule.
