We are seeking a talented and motivated Senior DevOps Engineer to join our team. You’ll bridge multiple software teams and our centralized DevOps organization. You’ll champion developer experience by getting your hands dirty with our tools and processes, advocating for best practices while rolling up your sleeves to turn ambiguous challenges into clear, scalable solutions. You’ll be a mentor, collaborator, and the go‑to doer who’s always ready to dive in wherever the rubber meets the road. Your expertise will directly contribute to the scalability, reliability, and efficiency of our services, enabling our development teams to deliver innovative solutions. You’ll collaborate with self-starters, technically gifted and motivated software engineers, radar specialists, space operators, open-data enthusiasts, thought leaders, and people who get things done without much direction.
Our aim is to hire this position to work in Umbra's Santa Barbara, CA or Arlington, VA office.
Key Responsibilities
+ Spend quality time embedded with each of our software engineering teams, understanding their workflows, pain points, and goals.
+ Champion tooling improvements, documentation standards, and process enhancements that let dev teams move faster and with greater confidence.
+ Keep a tight feedback loop with our core DevOps org, helping align on infrastructure initiatives and best practices.
+ Develop shared libraries, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code modules, and self‑service capabilities that serve all teams.
+ Own complex, loosely defined problems, gather requirements, prototype solutions, and guide teams toward consensus.
+ Teach best practices in cloud architecture, containerization, observability, and automation. Host brown‑bags, office hours, and pairing sessions.

Pay Transparency
This job posting may cover multiple career levels. To ensure greater transparency, we provide base salary ranges for all roles, regardless of location. Our standard pay ranges are based on the role’s function and level, benchmarked against similar growth-stage companies. Compensation may vary based on geographical location, as certain regions may have different cost-of-living factors. The final offer will also be influenced by the candidate's skills, responsibilities, and relevant experience.
Compensation Range
The Compensation Range for this role is $160,000 - $185,000 DOE.
Required Qualifications
+ Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent work experience.
+ 8+ years of cloud infrastructure, DevOps, or cloud engineering experience.
+ Knowledge of microservices and serverless architectures.
+ Deep working knowledge of AWS services and best practices.
+ Expertise in infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation, or equivalent).
+ Proficiency in Python, Go, or another scripting/programming language.
+ Strong experience with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes).
+ Demonstrated ability to build and maintain CI/CD pipelines (GitLab, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, etc.).
+ Familiarity with monitoring, logging, and observability tools (Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, etc.).
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Desired Qualifications
+ Ability to get spun up on a team quickly and deliver value.
+ Experience working with teams in distributed environments.
+ Proven track record at startups, small teams, or as a solo contributor where you defined your own roadmap.
+ Experience embedded as a DevOps partner within multiple software teams.
+ Understanding of network topology, security groups, and compliance best practices.
+ Experience mentoring and leading technical workshops or brown‑bag sessions.
+ Experience working in aerospace, robotics, sciences, or other related technical fields.
