The Amazon tax department is a fast-paced, team-focused, and dynamic environment. Amazon is seeking a Tax Manager to drive Federal Tax technology and process improvement initiatives within our Federal Tax Compliance and Reporting team. This role will focus on tax technical concepts while developing and implementing technological solutions to optimize federal tax operations, with an emphasis on automation, process improvement, and innovation.
Key job responsibilities
• Independently lead complex federal tax technical process improvement projects for US Federal Income Tax compliance and reporting
• Design and implement automation solutions using technology (Python, SQL, Alteryx, AI, and other relevant solutions)
• Collaborate with tax subject matter experts and tax technology teams to deliver requirements, develop and test scalable solutions
• Identify opportunities for process optimization and drive implementation of solutions
• Ensure compliance with tax laws while innovating tax processes and technologies
• Create and maintain project documentation for new processes and solutions
• Analyze complex tax data sets and develop insights to inform decision-making
• Keep up to date on tax law and the organizational impact of changes
• Evaluate and recommend new tax technology solutions
• Train and mentor tax team members about technology solutions and tax models
• Serve as a subject matter expert in tax technology, bridging the gap between tax technical and IT
A day in the life
As a Tax Manager within Amazon's Federal Tax team, you'll focus on driving process improvements and technology solutions while collaborating on federal tax compliance. Your day includes leading project meetings with cross-functional teams, analyzing tax processes, and identifying automation opportunities. You'll work closely with tax professionals and technology teams to gather requirements, troubleshoot issues, and implement innovative solutions. Your tasks may include reviewing automation code, developing data visualization dashboards, or evaluating new tax technology solutions. While maintaining deep tax technical knowledge, you'll balance multiple priorities to drive technological transformation in federal tax operations.
About the team
The Federal Reporting and Compliance team manages Amazon's worldwide taxable income calculations and federal tax obligations. We own the full lifecycle of federal tax provision and compliance, including worldwide taxable income calculations for quarterly closes, forecasts, and annual returns. While collaborating with specialist teams on areas like stock compensation, R&D credits, and TCJA provisions, we drive technological innovation and process improvements to enhance efficiency and controllership in our deliverables. Our work directly impacts Amazon's global tax provision and US federal income tax reporting.
Basic Qualifications
- 5+ years of tax, finance or a related analytical field experience
- CPA
- Knowledge of at least one data-focused technology tool, such as Python, SQL, Alteryx, Amazon QuickSight, or similar
- Knowledge of accounting principles, processes, and entries
- Experience working in a large public accounting firm or multi-national corporate tax department
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office products and applications at an advanced level
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in accounting, information systems, finance, or equivalent
- Experience with VBA, Python, SQL, or other database language
- Experience with Corptax tax return and provision preparation or equivalent software
- Experience with Agile methodologies

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $80,900/year in our lowest geographic market up to $172,900/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
