    ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

    The Solid Waste Department is responsible for the proper management of solid waste generated in Deschutes County. The Department operates Knott Landfill and four rural transfer stations where the public, contractors and waste collection companies deliver waste for disposal at Knott Landfill in Bend.

    ABOUT THE JOB:

    As a Public Works Customer Service Clerk, you will have the opportunity to interact and provide prompt and courteous service to our customers. This position is responsible for administrative and customer service duties such as telephone, processing transactions, creating forms and documents, data entry, scanning, and directing public to appropriate places or staff.

     

    The Public Works Customer Service Clerk is based in the Solid Waste Administration building. This position is the primary contact that the community has with the department, and the impression from that interaction reflects on the quality of our operations and the positive customer experience.

     

    This position works a Monday to Friday, 8 hour per day schedule.

    Key Responsibilities:

    + Provides customer service to internal/external customers; including operation of a multi-line phone, maintaining a friendly, professional image.

    + General administrative duties, including processing mail, record upkeep, office support, filing, scanning, and use of various office equipment within the department.

    + Completes routine office forms and records. Records intake information; enters data in systems; processes payments.

    What You Will Bring:

    Knowledge of or experience with:

    + Strong human relations skills and the ability to interact with and communicate clearly with all types of people, including elected officials, management, the public, and co-workers.

    + Basic knowledge of clerical and office procedures and methods.

    + Computer use and data entry.

    Skill in:

    + Customer service and direct interaction with the public.

    + Working well with or without direction, to prioritize and handle several projects with deadlines simultaneously.

    + Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers, citizens, developers, advocates, and regional agencies.

    Compensation

     

    $3,874.41 to $4,944.81 per month for a 173.33 hour work month. Excellent County benefit package when eligible. This union-represented position is available immediately.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + High school diploma or GED equivalent;

    + AND one (1) year of customer service experience, including data entry and payment processing;

    + OR any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge to perform the essential functions of the job.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Experience in direct interaction with public.

     

    Necessary Special Requirements

     

    Driving is a requirement for this position. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.

     

    Physical Requirements:Must have the ability to work in an office that is environmentally controlled; possess sufficient hand coordination to perform keyboarding and data entry; arm/hand movements to retrieve work materials and operate a variety of general office equipment. The position is frequently required to sit, walk, stoop, bend, kneel, reach, stand, grasp, talk, hear, see, and lift up to 10 pounds.

     

    Must be able to work additional hours and a flexible schedule when needed, including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, to meet the needs of the department and emergencies.
