The Army Multi-Domain ISR Operations and Systems (N212) department, part of MITRE’s Army Program Division within MITRE National Security, is dedicated to advancing the Army’s capabilities in intelligence collection, processing, and actionable decision-making. The department specializes in supporting the Army’s efforts to design, deliver, and sustain cutting-edge technologies that enhance multi-domain intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations. Key focus areas include Electronic Warfare, Signals Intelligence (SIGINT), intelligence targeting systems, ISR sensors, assured Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT), electromagnetic situational awareness, and non-kinetic effects to enable operational freedom and achieve overmatch.

N212 works closely with Army Acquisition organizations, including the Program Executive Office (PEO) Intelligence, Electronic Warfare, and Sensors (PEO IEW&S), as well as intelligence entities such as Army G-2 and INSCOM, the Space and Missile Defense Command, and science and technology research efforts with DEVCOM C5ISR. With primary locations at MITRE’s McLean Campus and Aberdeen, MD site, the department emphasizes collaboration through regular in-person engagements with team members and Army Sponsors. N212 is driven by a strong operational focus and deep technical expertise across a wide range of disciplines, ensuring its contributions are aligned with the Army’s mission to empower Warfighters and decision-makers with superior intelligence capabilities.

    Roles & Responsibilities:

MITRE’s Army Program Division is seeking a Lead Communications Engineer with a strong background in hardware/software integration, RF systems, and software-defined radios (SDRs) to lead the design, development, and fielding of advanced electronic warfare and signals intelligence systems. This role plays a critical part in supporting urgent, mission-driven Army programs that require rapid prototyping, hands-on integration, and technical excellence across a variety of system layers.

The selected candidate will operate at the intersection of software development, embedded systems, RF signal processing, and mission systems engineering. They will lead efforts to bring together diverse technologies—including compute platforms, RF front ends, mission software, and tactical interfaces—into cohesive, fieldable solutions. This role requires a systems thinker with strong technical depth, the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines, and a proactive mindset for field-ready delivery.

The Army Intelligence and Sensors Department (N212) partners closely with PEO IEW&S, Army G-2, INSCOM, SMDC, and DEVCOM C5ISR to develop and deliver ISR technologies that enable operational overmatch in complex environments.

+ Lead system-level integration and validation of advanced SDR-based mission systems.

+ Architect and deploy software applications across heterogeneous hardware environments, including compute, RF, and storage subsystems.

+ Collaborate closely with software developers, RF engineers, systems integrators, and government stakeholders to deliver end-to-end capability.

+ Develop test plans, interface control documentation, and acceptance criteria for multi-component prototypes.

+ Support field exercises, laboratory demonstrations, and sponsor engagements to validate and transition technologies.

+ Conduct root-cause analysis and troubleshooting across hardware, firmware, software, and network layers.

    Basic Qualifications:

+ Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a B.S. in Engineering (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical, Computer), Computer Science, or a related technical field; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

+ Demonstrated ability to perform advanced troubleshooting across hardware, firmware, software, and network layers.

+ Experience integrating and validating multi-component systems that include compute, storage, networking, and RF signal paths.

+ Expertise in languages such as Python, React.js, Vue.js, NodeJS, C/C++, Java, or .NET technologies.

+ Expertise in software development and systems engineering (SE) including modern software development processes and practices including agile development methods (e.g., DevSecOps).

+ Possess and maintain an active DoD Top Secret/SCI security clearance.

+ This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site presence.

    Preferred Qualifications:

+ M.S. in Engineering (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical, Computer), Computer Science, or a related technical field with demonstrated experience in software development or hardware/software integration.

+ Expertise in languages such as Python, React.js, Vue.js, NodeJS, C/C++, Java, or .NET technologies.

+ Expertise in software development and systems engineering (SE) including modern software development processes and practices including agile development methods.
