- The Emergency Management Specialist collaborates with leadership to develop, evaluate, and improve emergency management plans across Sanford Health facilities. This role includes conducting hazard analyses, coordinating preparedness exercises, performing facility assessments, and leading mitigation, training, and improvement initiatives. The specialist also partners with public health agencies and community stakeholders to enhance disaster preparedness, ensure regulatory compliance, and support effective emergency response and recovery efforts. Some travel is required.
Job Summary
The Emergency Management Specialist is responsible for preparing, carrying out and/or coordinating emergency functions to prevent, protect from, mitigate against, prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies and disasters. The Emergency Management Specialist will work in close collaboration with leadership to develop, review, and enhance emergency management response plans across Sanford Health facilities. Key responsibilities include conducting hazard vulnerability analyses and implementing effective mitigation strategies based on identified risks. The specialist will also prepare for and conduct comprehensive assessments of healthcare facilities to evaluate the effectiveness of emergency management plans and programs. Additionally, this role is responsible for developing after-action reports and improvement plans following incidents, exercises, and assessments, as well as coordinating, designing, implementing, and evaluating exercises to test and strengthen the organization’s emergency preparedness and response capabilities.
The Emergency Management Specialist will also be responsible for conducting site visits and assessments to support healthcare facilities in their preparedness efforts and development of improvement plans. This role will oversee the creation and management of agreements, documentation, public education materials, and training programs necessary to effectively deliver emergency management initiatives. The specialist will track project progress using defined timelines and benchmarks, ensuring goals and objectives are documented and achieved. Additional responsibilities include coordinating with external agencies in the design and review of emergency management plans, establishing evaluation criteria to measure program effectiveness, and ensuring ongoing compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and guidance documents.
The Emergency Management Specialist will collaborate with emergency management and public health agencies to enhance preparedness for major medical disasters. This role requires establishing and maintaining a strong professional network by fostering effective working relationships with media representatives, key officials, agency stakeholders, and community organizations to facilitate communication and program outreach. The specialist will provide timely, informed recommendations to leadership and partners during emergency situations, demonstrating sound operational decision-making. Additionally, the role involves maintaining subject matter expertise through ongoing professional development and actively expanding emergency management partnerships. The specialist will also be responsible for reviewing and coordinating continuity of operations and other contingency plans in collaboration with community leaders, coalitions, and relevant stakeholders.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in emergency management or related field required, Master’s degree preferred. In lieu of education, leadership may consider a combination of 6 years of pertinent education and work experience.
Should have a basic knowledge of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and Joint Commission requirements, healthcare emergency management processes and Department of Health and Human Services Hospital Preparedness Program requirements. Also, knowledge of federal and state laws as well as local regulatory agencies is mandatory.
Possession of a valid driver's license is required. Certification in Certified Healthcare Emergency Professional (CHEP), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Professional Development and Incident Command Training to the 300 level is required within one year of hire. CEM Preferred
