Job Description
The New York City Law Department seeks an experienced and visionary leader to serve as our Chief Law Librarian. The successful candidate will lead the library staff to drive innovation, improve services, and enhance the experience of library users.
Duties of the position include:
- Provide leadership for all of the department's activities and services include planning, developing and evaluating departmental activities and initiatives.
- Supervise, evaluate and guide the development of the professional and support staff.
- Provide research and reference services to the Law Department, and on occasion to the Mayor's Office, the City Council, and other New York City agencies.
- Explore and investigate potential new research and artificial intelligence solutions.
- Manage and perform investigative research, including social media searches.
- Maintain online storage of some Library resources, as well as physical storage of historical and other print materials.
- Maintain accurate research and collection management data, statistics, reports, and policies.
- Oversee coordination of online research training.
- Coordinate organization of Library resources including cataloging and serials check-in.
- Monitor expenditures, review and implement collection management policies, and supervise vendor relations.

Qualifications
Applicants must be admitted to the New York State Bar and have a MLS degree in addition to a JD degree. Applicants must have a broad law library background and an understanding of principles and current trends in library sciences, services, operations and technologies. They should be able to demonstrate a history of successful supervision and management of professional and support staff to work as a team to meet common goals. They should be skilled at navigating the emerging technological landscape and its impact on law libraries. Finally, they should be able to participate in multiple concurrent projects in a given timeframe, monitor project workflows, and meet project deadlines.
