A Glimpse of the Job
The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist Supervisor supervises Environmental Health and Safety Specialists in functional areas. Provides specialized knowledge in the operation and support of assigned area within an environmental health and safety program. Develops programs, offers technical guidance and identifies, evaluates and measures effectiveness of safety programs.
Job Responsibilities:
+ SUPERVISION - Directly supervises Environmental Specialists in various functional areas to ensure required codes, State rules, and System regulations are met. Schedules, prioritizes tasks, and assigns duties. Hires, trains, schedules assignments, evaluates performance of Specialists and provides input to the termination process as necessary. Reviews Specialists' reports and recommendations to ensure all conclusions and results are valid.
+ TECHNICAL SUPPORT - Provides technical support for the TAMU Environmental Health and Safety program at the TAMU Health Houston campus; assists in the development of safety manuals and other written guidelines. Develops and implements safety education training and awareness programs.
+ HAZARDOUS MATERIALS - Removes hazardous waste materials from laboratories. Requires driving a university vehicle.
+ RECORDS - Prepares and maintains records and reports pertaining to assigned duties.
+ EVALUATES COMPLIANCE - Evaluates compliance with TAMU Environmental Health and Safety policies and procedures by conducting regular safety inspections. Provides advice and technical guidance, including corrective action. Assists faculty, students, and staff regarding the interpretation and implementation of health and safety regulations, policies and procedures.
+ EMERGENCY RESPONSE - Responds to emergencies as needed. Requires driving a university vehicle.
+ EQUIPMENT AND INVENTORIES - Maintains safety and environmental monitoring equipment necessary to perform job duties. Assists with laboratory chemical inventories.

Required Education and Experience:
+ Bachelor's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Five years of work experience in safety and health field, such as: industrial hygiene, fire safety, occupational safety or occupational health to include two years of supervisory work experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
+ Master’s degree in related discipline.
+ Two years of supervisory experience.
+ Experience working in higher-education environment.
+ Experience implementing safety programs in research laboratory and/or clinic environments.
Required Licenses and Certifications:
+ State of Texas Class “C” driver’s license or the ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
Preferred Licenses and Certifications:
+ Associate Safety Professional, Certified Safety Professional or other related professional certification.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
+ Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
+ Knowledge of health and safety rules, regulations, and standards.
+ Knowledge of NFPA, TCEQ, and other health and safety regulations.
+ Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
+ Customer service skills.
+ Ability to communicate effectively with all segments of the campus population.
Other Requirements or Other Factors:
Ability to be on-call for responding after-hours to emergency situations on campus as needed. Ability to exert moderate force and lift or move heavy objects.
