    Duties Description Under the direct supervision of the Section Superintendent or Transportation Office Assistant 2, the Office Assistant 1 Stores/Mail will perform a variety of duties in support of the daily operations of the Canal. Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following: • Receive, unload, unpack, sort, store, count, and distribute goods received by the office, following established procedures• Keep shelves and stock clean, neat, and in proper place• Maintain files, correspondence, documents, and materials, pursuant to guidelines• Maintain various listings for mail service purposes• May operate a motor vehicle to pick up and deliver mail.• Performs a variety of duties as assigned

     

    Minimum Qualifications NY HELPSThis title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.NON-COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSThere are no minimum education or experience requirements for this title.COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSCandidates must be reachable on the Civil Service eligible list for the Office Assistant 1 Stores/Mail OR have one year of permanent competitive service in a title eligible for transfer. GOVERNOR’S PROGRAM TO HIRE INDIVIDUALS AND VETERANS WITH DISABILITIESSection 55-b of the New York State Civil Service Law authorizes the New York State Civil Service Commission to designate up to 1,700 positions normally filled through competitive examination to be filled through the appointment of qualified persons with disabilities. Section 55-c authorizes the designation of up to 500 positions in the non-competitive class to be filled by qualified veterans with disabilities. Eligibility for these programs is limited to persons with qualifying disabilities, who are found otherwise qualified to satisfactorily perform the duties of a position.
