Position Title:
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician I - Hourly
Job Description:
The Trails and Natural Lands (TNL) GIS Analyst will help collect, manage and report on all ecological, recreation and other geographic information collected by staff. This position will require working up to 50% of their time assisting field staff with mapping and data collection in the outdoors on and off trails in open space environments. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in GIS, collaborate and communicate well with team members, a passion for the outdoors, and an appropriate level of physical fitness needed to access remote locations.

TYPICAL DUTIES:
+ Maintains metadata, scripting tools (Python/ModelBuilder), and documentation to support GIS workflows.
+ Collaborates with staff and departments to collect data in the field using Survey123 and Field Maps, and ensures spatial data quality through QA/QC, field verification, and automation.
+ Supports internal and public-facing map applications using ArcGIS Online.
+ Prepares basic maps and tabular reports using plotters and other output devices.
+ Provides cartographic products and analysis for reporting, permitting, and decision support.
+ Conducts UAV monitoring and analysis to support vegetation change detection, trail development tracking, and site restoration efforts.
+ Performs other duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Graduation from high school or equivalency, including course work in trigonometry and/or algebra, and two years of experience in one or more of the following areas: computer-aided design and drafting, GIS, surveying or computer data entry. Two years post-high school training in civil engineering, computer science, GIS, surveying or a related field may be substituted for two years' work experience.
+ Ability to operate computers and basic familiarity with AutoCAD and ArcView. Familiarity with basic surveying methods and techniques.
+ Ability to work well with co-workers, supervisors, other agencies and the general public under a variety of circumstances.
+ Possession of a valid Utah driver's license or driving privilege card and ability to work unconventional hours and overtime when required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
+ Frequent exposure to computer terminals for extended periods. Light physical effort. Comfortable working conditions, handling of light weights, intermittent sitting, standing and walking. Occasional driving to field sites.
+ Intermittent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.
