JOB SUMMARY:
The Learning Resource Program hourly Counselor will be responsible for delivering goal-directed therapy services to stu dents enrolled in the Learning Resource Program. This is an in-person position working up to 20 hours per week at Adelphi’s Garden City campus.
The duration of this position aligns with the academic calendar each year. The position begins one week prior to the start of the Fall 2025 semester and ends two weeks following the end of the Spring 2026 semester. The start date for the upcoming academic year is August 18 and the end date is June 6.
SALARY INFORMATION:
In compliance with New York’s Pay Transparency Act, the salary for this position is $45.00 - $48.00 per hour. Adelphi University considers factors such as departmental budgets, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. An annual base salary higher than the range may be warranted in circumstances where a candidate has demonstrable equivalent prior higher education experience at another University.
REPORTS TO: Director of Student Counseling Center with additional supervision and duties provided by the Associate Director of the Learning Resource Program.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
+ Provide individual and group counseling services to a culturally diverse student population primarily using a Solution-Focused Brief Therapy approach.
+ Conduct needs assessments, intake evaluations, treatment follow-up, and appropriate referrals.
+ Provide urgent care, crisis intervention and referrals to higher levels of care.
+ Provide referrals to on- and off-campus providers for specialized care.
+ Maintain clinical documentation in a thorough and timely manner using electronic medical record software.
+ Support Learning Resource Program students through the academic challenges they experience by providing individualized feedback, skills training, workshops and other outreach services.
+ Consult with Learning Resource Program staff on academic performance of students and recommend changes to policies and procedures that will improve the effectiveness of the Learning Resource Program.
+ Remain well acquainted with New York State and national legal and ethical policies for mental health practitioners.
+ Participate in regularly scheduled Case Conference and supervision sessions with the Student Counseling Center team.
+ Supervise at least one practicum student, if needed. (Free SIFI certification provided to eligible social workers).
+ Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
+ New York State license to practice social work, psychology, or mental health counseling. Supervision will be available.
+ Experienced in short-term, solution-focused, dynamic and/or cognitive behavioral therapy with the college-age population.
+ Ability to be organized and detail-oriented.
+ Ability to prioritize workload according to volume, urgency, etc.
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills.
+ Excellent interpersonal skills.
+ Strong computer skills using electronic medical record software (EMR), MS Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, popular web browsers, G-Suite and email.
+ Experienced with providing culturally competent treatment to diverse and underserved populations.
+ Experienced with providing clinical care to a neurodiverse student population.
EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
+ Masters of Social Work, Mental Health Counseling or Doctorate in Clinical or Counseling Psychology is required and eligible to practice in New York State.
+ Minimum two year’s post-license clinical experience.
+ SIFI certification is preferred (training can be provided).
+ Previous experience working with college-age, neurodiverse, clients is strongly preferred.
