Through academic affiliations with the University of California and Southern California, (UCLA) and (USC), the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a meaningful role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings, to supportive housing.

Definition:
Coordinates a medium-sized volunteer services program of a County facility or department or acts as associate to the director of a volunteer services program at a large County health facility or coordinates a comprehensive volunteer public relations program at the LAC/USC Medical Center.
Essential Job Functions
+ Plans, develops, and implements volunteer programs.
+ Supervises and participates in the recruitment, selection, orientation, training, and evaluation of volunteers.
+ Develops and maintains an integrated public relations program for volunteer activities.
+ Prepares news bulletins, feature articles, public notices, and public service announcements for all media.
+ Coordinates the dissemination of information to appropriate organizations, auxiliaries, and professional committees.
+ Establishes and maintains a positive relationship with the communications media to promote favorable media coverage of volunteer programs and public awareness of facility needs.
+ Has charge of the Medical Center Volunteer Program in the absence of the Director of Volunteer Programs, Medical Center.
+ Acts as liaison between community service groups and County personnel. Speaks before community groups to recruit new volunteers.
+ Creates and maintains volunteer program policies and procedures, ensures that volunteers align with departmental and hospital rules and regulations.
+ Evaluates existing programs and selects new programs.
+ Plans volunteer recognition ceremonies for individual volunteers and service groups. Attends staff meetings, professional meetings and conferences.
+ Maintains attendance records of volunteers and compiles periodic activity reports.
+ Identifies suitable contributions and activities of individuals and groups based upon identified needs and ensures that those services, supplies, and equipment are allocated and distributed appropriately.
+ Supervises volunteer assistants, clerical personnel and volunteers engaged in program activities.
Requirements
Requirement to Qualify:
Three (3) years paid or unpaid experience in a volunteer program, one year of which must have been in a supervisory* or administrative** capacity.
No out-of-class experience will be accepted.
License:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Physical class:
Physical Class II – Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.
Special requirement information:
*Supervisory capacity is defined as: has full supervisory responsibility including planning, assigning, scheduling, hiring, rating performance evaluations, disciplining, and counseling subordinate volunteer staff.
**Administrative capacity is defined as: performs work typically in an administrative services branch of an organization unit, including responsibility for the development of procedures and participation in policy formulation.
Desirable Qualifications:
Additional credit will be given to applicants who have the following desirable qualifications:
+ Additional years of supervisory* or administrative** experience in a hospital volunteer program beyond the requirements.
+ A bachelor’s degree*** from an accredited college or university
+ A Certified Administrator of Volunteer Services (CAVS) credential from the American Hospital Association Certification Center (AHA-CC).
***In order to receive credit for the required degree/coursework, certification, a legible copy of the official diploma or official transcripts needs to be provided with the application,or via email indicating your name, the exam name, and the exam number to [email protected] within 7 calendar days of filing your application online.
+ Note:Foreign studies must be evaluated by an accredited credential evaluation agency recognized by the NACES or the AICE of the United States (US) and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from the US. Applications indicating possession of a degree or certificate without providing evidence, may not be considered for credit.

Examination content:
Examination will consist of an evaluation of experience based upon application information, desirable qualifications and supplemental questionnaire weighted 100%.
You must meet the requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher in order to be placed on the eligible register.
Eligibility Information:

Scores will be valid for 12 months from the date of results notice.
No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.
