    Summary

    The Waste Treatment Operator is a member of a team which consists of other waste treatment area employees including waste dryer operators and maintenance personnel. This team is accountable to the Shift Manager and Environmental Manager.

     

    The individual in this position will fully understand the purpose and operation of the Waste Treatment area along with having the ability to make decisions based on sound judgment when a situation dictates. It is imperative the person in this position conduct himself or herself in a manner that ensures alertness and constant awareness of the safe operation of equipment and their surroundings.

     

    The individual in this position will accomplish these tasks by utilizing a team concept through working with team members and following direction and instructions from the Environmental Manager/Supervisor or Shift Manager.

     

    Work relationships and communication are key ingredients to the success of the individual holding this position and therefore must maintain open communications with the Shift Manager and maintenance personnel.

     

    Overtime requirements in this position are common and may be required to meet operational goals.

    Key Responsibilities

    + Maintains necessary level of communication with team members and other support groups and does so in a participative management style, conducive with operational goals. Ensures compliance with Company standards for sludge thickening and dewatering.

    + Maintains Company standards for safety, quality, food safety, sanitation and GMPs.

    + Ensures that pH meters and all other analytical and online testing equipment are properly calibrated at all times.

    + Ensures that the waste flow is within the limits of the waste treatment system and the permit.

    + Ensures non-functioning equipment is reported to proper maintenance and supervisory personnel, logged, and monitored for timely repair.

    + Conducts start up, operation and shut down of all equipment related to the Process Water Treatment and Return Water.

    + Ensures that the equipment is operated in a safe and efficient manner to minimize the waste treatment loadings.

    + Interpret and analyze daily testing and operational data and make appropriate adjustments to systems as necessary.

    + Ensures that additional accountabilities required by management are handled in a manner necessary to meet operational standards. May assist with training other plant personnel.

    + Conducts and records testing and sampling of wastewater and solids in a timely, accurate manner.

    Typical Education

    High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

    Relevant Experience

    + Experience operating or assisting in the operation of wastewater treatment plants or industrial water systems.

    + Familiarity with biological, chemical, and physical treatment processes.

    + Hands-on experience with pumps, valves, motors, and piping systems.

    + Ability to perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting on mechanical and electrical systems.

    + Experience conducting water quality tests (e.g., pH, turbidity, solids).

    + Use of analytical instruments and calibration of meters.

    + Understanding of EPA, OSHA, and local environmental regulations.

    + Experience maintaining compliance with permits and discharge limits.

    + Ability to maintain accurate logs and reports of system performance and maintenance.

    + Familiarity with SCADA systems or other digital monitoring tools is a plus.

    + Knowledge of safety protocols, including handling of chemicals and confined space entry.

    + Experience working in environments with strict sanitation and GMP standards.

    Required Certifications

    New Waste Treatment Operators without licensing will serve as an apprentice for up to 6 months.

     

    Employees are not able to test until they have held the position for at least 6 months, after which they then have an additional 6 months to complete testing (total of 12 months).

     

    Licenses of ND#1, ND#2, or ND #3 are not required.
