    We have an exciting opportunity for a Director of Engineering, Design, & Construction to join our Facilities team in San Diego, CA.

     

    The Director of Engineer, Design & Construction (EDC) will lead and manage the company's Facilities Engineering team and all construction projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with quality and safety standards. This individual will oversee the entire construction process, from design to pre-construction planning to post-construction closeout, while maintaining close communication with internal teams, clients, subcontractors, and vendors.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Leadership & Management

    + Provide strategic direction and leadership to the facilities EDC team, including project managers, engineers, capital controls, engineering and other staff members.

    + Ensure the development of high-performing teams through training, mentoring, and performance management.

    + Establish performance standards, conduct regular performance evaluations, and provide feedback to team members to ensure continuous improvement.

    + Collaborate with senior leadership to establish construction goals, budgets, schedules, and timelines.

    + Lead and manage a team of engineers, technicians and facilities personnel to ensure the efficient operation of all building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and fire/life safety systems.

    + Foster a culture of safety, teamwork, and accountability within the facilities engineering department.

    + Act as a liaison between internal departments and external stakeholders to ensure alignment of project objectives and deliverables

    Project Oversight & Execution

    + Lead the planning, design, and execution of capital improvement projects, including renovations, expansions, and upgrades to building systems and infrastructure.

    + Prepare and manage budgets for expense and capital projects, ensuring cost-effective delivery while maintaining the quality and integrity of the facilities.

    + Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with applicable regulations and safety standards.

    + Oversee the selection and management of contractors and vendors for facility improvement projects.

    + Ensure timely resolution of project challenges and issues, including contractor performance, delays, and unforeseen complications.

    + Review project plans, specifications, and contracts to ensure they align with organizational objectives.

    Risk Management & Compliance

    + Identify, assess, and mitigate potential risks associated with construction projects.

    + Ensure all projects adhere to safety regulations, building codes, and legal requirements.

    + Enforce compliance with environmental, health, and safety policies across all construction sites.

    + Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, regulations, and best practices.

    Client & Stakeholder Communication

    + Provide regular project updates, progress reports, and presentations to executives and stakeholders on the status of construction projects.

    + Represent the company in client meetings and external interactions, ensuring customer satisfaction and addressing any concerns promptly.

    + Communicate clearly and effectively with external vendors, contractors, and service providers to ensure that all facility services are delivered as required.

    Vendor & Subcontractor Management

    + Build and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors.

    + Monitor subcontractor performance, and ensure they comply with project schedules and safety standards.

    + Evaluate and select subcontractors and vendors based on project requirements and quality standards.

    Job Qualifications:

    + Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Facilities Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred) with a minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in Management, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.

    + Proven experience in managing large-scale construction projects, from pre-construction through to completion.

    + Strong understanding of construction processes, project management, and industry standards.

    + Proven experience in managing facilities operations, including the oversight of building systems and infrastructure.

    + Strong background in budget management, capital project planning, and energy management.

    Skills & Competencies:

    + Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to manage cross-functional teams.

    + Excellent written and verbal communication skills for stakeholder management and project reporting.

    + Solid knowledge of construction contracts, cost estimation, and financial control processes.

    + Ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines effectively, while maintaining attention to detail.

    + In-depth knowledge of building codes, safety regulations, and industry best practices.

    + Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.

    + Proficiency in project management software (e.g., Procore, MS Project) and Microsoft Office Suite.

    Desired Certifications:

    + Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification.

    + LEED accreditation or other sustainability-focused certifications.

    + OSHA certification or similar safety-related credentials.

    Physical Requirements:

    + Ability to visit construction sites and observe work in progress.

    + Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and work in various outdoor conditions.

    Work Environment:

    + Office environment, with frequent visits to construction sites.

    + Occasional travel may be required based on project needs.
