While working with organizational leaders throughout UW Medicine, the primary objective of this position is to solve problems and improve the performance of individual employees, teams/departments, and UW Medicine as a whole.
• Assessing complex organizational and individual employee needs
• Developing appropriate interventions or programs in response to the identified needs
• Providing leadership training and coaching
• Conducting small and large group facilitations
• Assessing and developing education and training opportunities to meet client and organizational needs
• Promoting and supporting a high functioning environment that fosters continuous learning and development
This position works with senior management throughout UW Medicine including both medical centers and the many related entities. It deals with extremely sensitive issues including change management, reorganizations (including layoffs), and difficult interpersonal relationships.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** **Organization-Wide and Client Specific Needs Assessment (30%)
Conducts thorough, comprehensive organization-wide and client-specific need assessments, with the ability to respond quickly to urgent situations. Needs analysis responsibility includes evaluation of informal and organization-wide programs, systems, and departmental structures. Evaluations include assessment of staff and management performance, recommended approaches to improving performance, and follow up to determine effectiveness and sustainment of agreed upon change.
_Competencies:_
• Recognize what is required to solve long-standing problems or recurring conflicts
• In collaboration with the client, identify desired outcomes
• Contract with the client for cooperation, collaboration and joint responsibility, and then model these essential behaviors
• Document current conditions while identifying patterns and assessing circumstances from both a broad systems perspective as well as from an individual and team perspective
• Evaluate the client’s needs and expectations in a realistic manner, based on knowledge and experience of other change efforts and organizational goals/priorities
Intervention and Program Development and Delivery (30%)
Develops plans, programs and interventions intended to solve problems and improve performance based upon assessed needs, client goals, and presenting circumstances. Interventions may include but are not limited to interviews, leadership development and coaching, team development, retreats, training and development programs, strategic planning, and conflict management. Training interventions should include various training methods, development and delivery of curriculum, and evaluation of training effectiveness.
_Competencies:_
• Focus on major system outputs and trace them as they flow through the entire system, maintaining and demonstrating a clear understanding of systems fit
• Communicate the intricacies and complexities of a system and how implementation of changes in one area may impact other areas
• Map out a plan for managing the consulting process
• Develop relationships at all levels that are grounded in trust and credibility
• Provide instructional design consultation based on adult learning theories
• Create customized interventions and/or education for individuals and work groups
• Coach and mentor other consultants/trainers as needed
• Design and deliver workshops ensuring achievement of educational objectives
Consultation and Leadership Coaching (30%)
Acts as expert in the areas of strategic planning, change management, systems thinking and interpersonal interactions to improve performance in clinical and non-clinical areas throughout UW Medicine.
_Competencies:_
• Provide consultation and/or training to improve skills in communication, problem solving, team development, customer service, diversity awareness, leadership, transition and change management, and other skill building related to organization effectiveness
• Support high-level strategic change efforts throughout UW Medicine, providing consulting advice and assistance as needed to all internal clients
• Articulate to the client, in a clear and understandable manner, the appropriate educational and/or organizational development intervention and its anticipated effect on performance and operational results
• Maintain professional objectivity, persistence and tolerance for working through the process, especially when things grow complex or emotionally charged
• Determine the types and amount of data that will help the clients focus on the pertinent issues
• Obtain agreement on problem definition, specific outcomes desired, and proposed solutions
Project Management (10%)
Plans, develops, and executes projects using effective project management skills.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor's degree in business administration, education, organization psychology, organization development or related
• Four years of experience in a consulting role, including developing appropriate interventions based on needs assessments
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in organization development, business administration, education, organization psychology, or related field preferred.
Previous management experience preferred; demonstrated track record in developing and delivering the following: strategic planning, leadership development, group facilitation, educational needs assessment, program design and evaluation, change management programs, in the context of organization culture change
_Demonstrated knowledge and experience with:_
o Various organization development models and practices
o Leadership development theories and practices
o Conflict management strategies and practices
WORKING CONDITIONS
This is an office job in a cube environment that requires extensive travel between Harborview, UW Medical Center, UW Campus, and the UW Tower as well as satellite clinics and facilities. Work weeks often exceed 40 hours
