Job Summary
A Research Associate position is available in the Division of Epidemiology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. This is a unique position that will integrate work across the Divisions of Epidemiology, General Internal Medicine, and Infectious Diseases through the Utah Quality Advancement Laboratory (UQuAL). UQuAL is an interdisciplinary health services research group Co-Directed by Dr. Julia E. Szymczak that seeks to improve patient care in a way that is sustainable, equitable, and tailored to the complex social environments in which medicine occurs. The successful applicant will work as part of a multidisciplinary team of established researchers focused on antimicrobial stewardship, diagnostic safety, implementation science, and mixed-methods pragmatic research _._ Researchers in UQuAL conduct studies to improve the safety, quality and equity of healthcare delivery, with a specific focus on the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. Our studies examine the influence of social interaction, communication, emotions, and organizational context on clinical decision making and the implementation of evidence-based interventions.
The Research Associate will collaborate on established mixed-methods projects related to antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention, and diagnostic safety funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality ( AHRQ ), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ), the National Institute of Health ( NIH ), and the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute ( PCORI ). Through this work the Research Associate will be primarily expected to drive forward already funded studies but will also be provided with opportunities to further develop independent research ideas, with an emphasis on manuscript writing and preparing extramural funding applications. The Research Associate will share in authorship and investigator status in a manner commensurate with their effort and responsibilities.
The Research Associate will be supervised by Dr. Szymczak and will have access to scholarly group meetings, dedicated time for manuscript writing, guidance on grant writing, and support for professional development activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
+ PhD or equivalent doctorate in a health-related field (e.g., epidemiology, sociology, anthropology, public health, psychology, nursing, health services research, communications)
+ Prior experience with qualitative methods, mixed-methods, and survey methods in health services research.
+ An interest in learning principles and methods of implementation science
+ Demonstrated ability to write publishable scholarly manuscripts
+ Ability to multitask and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team
+ Flexibility and willingness to learn new skills
Responsibilities
+ Candidate must be a self-motivated academic researcher who interacts and communicates well with others at the professional, technical, and administrative levels via oral, written, and electronic communication.
+ Candidate must be able to participate in a team science environment and be willing to collaborate on established research projects.
+ Candidate is expected to serve as the first author of high quality manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals using UQuAL or related data (goal is 3 first-author submissions per year).
+ Candidate is expected to substantively contribute as the middle author of UQuAL manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals (goal is 2 middle-author submissions per year).
+ Candidate is expected to create and deliver scientific presentations and reports to support UQuAL dissemination activities.
+ Candidate will be available to support general research operations in the group, which includes miscellaneous scientific, administrative, and educational activities.

+ An interest in research on antibiotic prescribing, antibiotic use and antibiotic stewardship.
