    Job Overview

     

    To fully support the mission of Northeast Iowa Community College through the functions of teaching, service and scholarship. To provide effective instruction to ensure academic programming attains student learning outcomes and prepares students for successful transition into the workforce or transfer to a post-secondary institution. To carry out assigned responsibilities to ensure academic programs are sustainable and aligned with accreditation standards. Provide effective instruction of obstetric nursing and carry out assigned related responsibilities.

     

    Master’s degree in nursing required; or BSN with annual progression toward a master’s degree in nursing. Must have a minimum three years’ experience in obstetric and/or pediatric nursing; teaching experience is desired. Must be able to meet Iowa Board of Nursing academic qualifications and the credentialing requirements in Northeast Iowa Community College’s Quality Faculty Plan (QFP). Must maintain current Iowa RN licensure.

     

    The College recognizes three broad areas of faculty endeavor: **teaching, scholarship, and service,** and expects that all faculty members will be active in each of these areas.

     

    _Teaching_

     

    Teaching is a core activity of the College and involves working with credit and non-credit students. All faculty members are expected to achieve **excellence** in this role. Teaching includes not only traditional classroom, laboratory and clinical instruction. Teaching includes evolving forms of technology-enhanced instruction such as hybrid, online, distance learning courses, competency based learning, and other non-classroom instruction such as the supervision of interns/co-op students and clinical students. The following provides a list of the essential expectations in teaching:

     

    1. Remain current with methods, content and technology in the content area.

    2. Complete delegated teaching assignment in accordance with guidelines/expectations for teaching methodology.

    3. Meet all class, office and college commitments.

    a. Maintain class and course responsibilities as assigned;

    b. Post and maintain office hours to meet student needs each semester. Office hours can be

     

    carried out face-to-face or using virtual technology.

     

    c. Attend College celebrations, scheduled workshop days and events (Convocation, Commencement, All College Day, Fall Fest, open houses etc.).

    4. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    a. Establish/participate as a representative on secondary and post-secondary program

     

    advisory boards and respond to recommendations.

     

    b. Ensure an ongoing process of course, curriculum and program evaluation.

    c. Assume a leadership role in curriculum and course alignment discussions with adjunct and

     

    concurrent faculty.

     

    5. Evidence a commitment to the assessment of student learning. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    a. Follow assessment activity timeline/deadlines.

    b. Incorporate assessment activities in the instructional content.

    c. Facilitate collaboration among all faculty (adjunct, concurrent, and full-time) teaching in the

     

    program/course to ensure course content and embedded assessments are consistent.

     

    6. Maintain a classroom environment that supports student engagement, retention and completion.

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    a. Utilize instructional methods that require student engagement and collaboration.

    b. Provide feedback, assessments and grades according to prescribed guidelines.

    c. Ensure the classroom environment provides respect for diversity and individual viewpoints.

    d. Emphasize to all students the importance of prompt and regular class attendance.

    e. Provide persistent outreach to students not attending class or meeting class requirements.

    f. Initiate referrals for identified at-risk student behaviors.

    7. Assist in the placement and success of students. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    a. Incorporate authentic learning into courses and programs.

    b. Engage with students in co-curricular activities through participation on a minimum of one

     

    co-curricular committee.

     

    c. Reinforce career pathway leading to workforce placement and/or transfer upon graduation.

    8. Attend and participate in annual state program, articulation, and course meetings.

    9. Meet roles and responsibilities as delegated by program accreditation bodies.

     

    _Scholarship_

     

    Faculty members are expected to engage in scholarly activity to enhance teaching effectiveness and facilitate life-long learning. The definition of scholarship at NICC is:

     

    Discipline- or pedagogy- based inquiry, creative expression, or applied work experience that expands, enhances, or applies knowledge.

     

    10. Maintain credentials and expertise in accordance with College guidelines and accreditation

     

    standards. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

     

    a. Meet requirements of Quality Faculty Plan.

    b. Remain current with methods and developments in the content area.

    c. Maintain technical and industry specific competencies related to area of instruction.

    d. Incorporate current technology practices into the classroom.

     

    _Service_

     

    Faculty members are expected to engage in activities at the department level that contribute to meeting the mission of the College. Faculty members are expected to contribute their disciplinary expertise through participation in internal and external community organizations relevant to their discipline of study.

     

    11. Comply with State and Federal Guidelines. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    a. Record daily student attendance in the learning management system.

    b. Submit accurate grades in accordance with prescribed guideline.

    c. Provide accommodations as identified by Disability Services.

    d. Maintain student privacy in accordance with professional and/or legal standards.

    12. Participate in program orientations, promotion and recruiting/enrollment events. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    a. Recruit program students.

    b. Participate in on-campus orientation and promotional events (student orientations,

     

    Welcome events; secondary and post-secondary visit days etc.).

     

    c. Participate in off-campus job fairs, high school and/or community events.

    13. Contribute as a member of the College community. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    a. Complete student advising, registration and/or mentoring activities as assigned.

    b. Attend and participate in all department meetings, workshop days and convocation events.

    c. Attend common hour activities.

    d. Serve on at least one college committee or one student organization annually.

    e. Carry out assigned responsibilities in alignment with the College conduct code.

    f. Maintain accountability, efficiency, and proactive utilization of program and college resources.

    g. Serve as a faculty liaison for concurrent enrollment courses as assigned and participate in

     

    discipline specific professional development for high school concurrent instructors.

     

    14. Perform additional duties as assigned.

    15. Specific Nursing Performance Responsibilities:

    a. Responsible for classroom, laboratory, and clinical instruction for nursing courses assigned.

    b. Teach courses in accordance with objectives of the course outline as set forth by the department in which one is assigned.

    c. Meet all scheduled class and office commitments as promptly as possible.

    d. Assist in advising and registration of students.

    e. Attend and participate in all scheduled faculty meetings unless excused by the Dean of Nursing.

    f. Emphasize to all classes the importance of prompt and regular class attendance.

    g. Keep attendance records on all students to comply with Federal Financial Aid Guidelines.

    h. Prepare and submit accurate grade reports to the Department Director as requested.

    i. Submit referrals to the Nursing Chair on all students who may be in need of counseling.

    j. Serve actively on any committees to which appointed.

    k. Submit requests for materials needed for instructional assignments.

    l. Keep accurate inventories of all equipment and supplies.

    m. Promptly report repairs needed for the classroom and equipment.

    n. Assist in recruiting students.

    o. Assist with the development and support of a cohesive general education program within

     

    the department, campus and college district.

     

    p. Represent the college in a professional manner in all settings.

    q. Adhere to responsibilities as outlined in the Department of Nursing Reference Manual.

    r. Assume a leadership role in assigned Program Evaluation Committees.

    s. Perform additional professional responsibilities as assigned.
