About the role
We are looking for a Director, Community Programs, to lead our philanthropic initiatives and support our private foundation's grantmaking efforts in a hybrid role based in Lake Forest, IL.
Responsible for (a) evolving and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the company’s philanthropic programs including the volunteer program, and the associate giving campaign and (b) assisting the company's private foundation's Chair and Trustees in grantmaking and grants management functions. Responsibilities under (a) include developing operational plans, running an employee annual giving campaign, planning and executing volunteer events, and cultivating donor relationships. Responsibilities under (b) include assisting the foundation's Trustees in the identification, selection, and allocation of grant funds to and among impactful organizations that align with the foundation's mission and working closely with the Trustees to enable them to make informed decisions regarding the foundation's grants program and overall organizational strategy.
Key Accountabilities:
Foundation Grants Program Planning:
+ Assist the foundation’s Chair and Trustees in the establishment of clear goals and priorities and the development and implementation of the foundation's strategic plan.
+ Identifies emerging needs in the community and proposes to the Trustees how best to align the foundation's grantmaking strategy accordingly.
+ Maintains strong partnership with the company's communications department to ensure that the foundation's communication strategies and tactics are appropriate to and aligned with the foundation's plans.
Foundation Grantmaking:
+ Develop a formal application process.
+ Transforms current grants programs by applying best practices.
+ Evaluates grant proposals from potential grantees, analyzing their needs and proposal alignment with the foundation's goals.
+ Conducts site visits to assess potential grantees and their programs and performs other due diligence as appropriate.
+ Recommends grant awards to the Trustees based on thorough evaluation and due diligence.
+ Monitors the progress of funded projects and ensures grantees meet performance metrics and comply with the terms of their grant agreements.
+ Alerts the Trustees promptly of any issues encountered with grantee performance including, but not limited to, actual or suspected improper use or other diversion of grant funds or any matter that could pose reputational risk by association with the grantee.
Charitable Organization Relations:
+ Identifies and cultivates relationships with charitable organizations.
+ Manages grantee portfolio and provides regular updates to the Trustees on grantmaking activities and impact.
Financial Management & Foundation Trustees Support:
+ Oversees expenditures from the foundation's budget, ensuring responsible allocation of funds across grantmaking initiatives as approved by the Trustees.
+ Prepares financial reports for the Trustees.
+ Communicates key information and updates to the Trustees regarding foundation operations and grantmaking activities.
Company's Annual Giving Campaign:
+ Lead and coordinate a committee of associate volunteers to plan and implement the annual campaign.
+ Work with partner organizations for campaign support and processing donations.
+ Use project management skills to aid in the coordination of all campaign communications and events.
+ Collaborate with people from all areas and locations of the company.
Company's Associate Volunteer Program:
+ Lead and coordinate a committee of associate volunteers to facilitate and increase associate volunteering.
+ Promote and analyze paid Volunteer Time Offer to determine impact.
+ Coordinate and execute company-wide volunteer events including annual Community Week.Other duties as needed/assigned. Will be required to keep timesheets separating time spent on foundation duties from time spent on company programs.
Minimum Requirements:
+ Bachelor's degree.
+ A minimum of four years of experience in fundraising or grantmaking work, including at least two years specializing in foundation or donor relationship management.
+ Understanding of non-profit principles and private foundation grantmaking practices.
+ Highly organized and planful with a proven ability to multi-task and operate both collaboratively and independently.
+ Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build relationships with grantees, Trustees, and associate volunteers.
+ Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
+ Solid analytical skills to evaluate grant proposals and measure program impact.
+ Experience planning associate volunteer and campaign events.
+ Understanding of philanthropic and volunteer best practices and trends.
+ Demonstrated skills and experience in managing foundation operations.
Preferred:
+ Advanced degree in philanthropy, public policy, or related field.
+ Knowledge of the insurance industry and its role in corporate philanthropy.
+ Familiarity with applicable systems such as Charity Navigator or similar.
+ Familiarity with confirming proposed grantee 501(c)(3) and public charity status on the irs.gov website (Tax Exempt Organizations Search and Exempt Organizations Business Master File Extract) and corporate existence and good standing in grantee's state of formation and, if different, state of its principal place of business.
The compensation range for this role is (based on the corporate location in Lake Forest, Illinois):
$90,107.00 - $150,178.00 per year
The final salary offer will be determined based on factors such as location, qualifications, experience, skill set, and other relevant factors. This position may also be eligible for bonus.
