Position Summary:
Reports to the chief of unit classification. Responsible for providing complex case management work including, planning, coordinating, developing and maintaining contact with assigned offenders, offender families, and various service providers in compliance with Management & Training Corporation (MTC) and Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) directives.
Essential Functions:
1. Review detailed background file and conduct personal interviews to analyze and recommend a program for each assigned offenders; develop and implement service plans to meet offender needs and serve as liaison between offenders, offender families, and service providers.
2. Initiate and maintain individual personal social development folder on each assigned offender.
3. Provide direct aid to offenders with personal needs or problems, including sickness, injury, family related issues, and other related personal problems.
4. Provide continuous educational, vocational, personal and social adjustment counseling on an individual and group basis.
5. Recommend necessary program modifications throughout each assigned offender's stay.
6. Assists in coordinating and participating in classification committee meetings; identifies problem areas, service gaps and areas that are barriers to services for offenders.
7. Provides case management services to include reviews of housing and work assignments, medical restrictions, security needs, time earning status, and custody levels; assists in documenting case records.
8. Interprets rules, regulations, policies, and procedures and responds to related inquires.
9. Make rounds through other areas of facility where offenders may be temporarily housed, programmed and/or work.
10. Assists in conducting orientation for newly assigned offenders regarding facility rules and regulations, available services and programs.
11. Maintain documentation and records.
12. Utilize new concepts and approaches; recommend and conduct training sessions and conferences to develop greater proficiency among staff in areas of guidance and social adjustment.
13. Recommend medical or psychiatric evaluation for emotional or psychological problems. Assist in the evaluation of facility services for offenders and recommend modifications for improvement.
14. Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed; provide regular feedback to staff regarding social skills procedures and intervention techniques.
15. Maintain accountability of offenders and property; adhere to safety practices.
It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Sixty (60) hours from a college or university accredited by an organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or by the United States Department of Education (USDE). Major course work in a Behavioral Science, Criminal Justice, or a related field preferred. Each year of experience as described below in excess of the required two (2) years may be substituted for thirty (30) semester hours from an accredited college or university on a year-for-year basis. Two (2) years full-time, wage-earning correctional custody, law enforcement, Offender case management, or correctional unit operations experience. Valid driver's license in the state of Texas with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.
Post Hire Requirements:
Must successfully complete annual in-service training requirements and pass an annual background check, both of which must be approved by TDCJ.
