    Clinical Veterinary Assistant

    Position Overview:

    It is the responsibility of the Clinical Veterinary Assistant (VA) to give responsible and compassionate care to all GCVS patients. They are responsible for all technical aspects of patient exams performed by the clinical departments, including but not limited to coordinating with clients and other members of the hospital, and performing imaging, phlebotomy, sedation, bandage changes, suture removals, and other treatments or procedures. Additional duties include exam and diagnostics coordination, medical record keeping, sample collection, inventory, and aseptic control. A VA must have good communication skills with hospital staff and clients to perform delegated tasks and produce quality results. Cleaning and stocking of all common areas is a daily requirement to maintain the standard level of care expected at GCVS. This position requires a dependable, high-energy individual who can handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a high-stress, fast-paced environment.

    Compensation:

    + Starting at $18+/ hr depending on experience

    Schedule:

    + Full Time

    + 5 x 8 Hour Shifts

    + Rotating Saturdays

    Key Responsibilities:

    + Provide patient restraint during procedures and examinations

    + Prepare instruments and medications as directed by veterinary personnel

    + Calm and soothe anxious patients

    + Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures, including word processing, designing forms, maintaining files, dictation and transcription, communicating via email, and using computer programs to manage and maintain client and patient information

    + Knowledge of basic drug usages, generic and brand names, possible side effects/reactions

    + Knowledge of clinic procedures in support of streamlining patient care protocols and enhancing the client experience

    + Assist in obtaining vitals and performing exams, treatments, and procedures

    + Monitor patients after surgical procedures to ensure they are recuperating well and report any negative changes to the veterinarian

    + Assist technicians in completing radiographs – input data, restraint, and submission

    + Collect and deliver lab samples to the lab and create lab queue

    + Bandage and wound care

    + Stock and clean common areas

    + Ensure that the clinic environment is clean and sanitized, including animal cages, treatment tables, dopplers, pulse oximeters, counters, floors, and food prep areas

    + Typing on a computer keyboard

    + Documenting legibly in patient records

    + Keep clear medical records for all patients

    + Log out and administer controlled substances

    + Prepare patients for discharge, ensuring they are well-groomed and in a medically appropriate state

    + Admit surgical patients, including obtaining temperature and weight

    + Obtain a TPR, blood pressure via Doppler, SpO2 via pulse oximetry, and EKG

    + Administer oral, topical, ocular, SQ, IM, and IV medications

    + Collect urine via expression and cystocentesis

    + Ability to monitor sedated patients and recognize normal anesthetic parameters

    Qualifications and Skills Sought:

    + High school diploma or equivalent required.

    + Veterinary TA certification or current enrollment in a technical assistant program strongly preferred/ or a combination of education/experience.

    + Minimum 1-2 years’ veterinary experience required, with technical assistant experience highly desirable.

    + Strong attention to detail alongside excellent verbal and written communication skills with both client and team members, with the capacity to support clients in emotionally charged and sensitive situations with empathy and professionalism.

    + Must be experienced with basic computer, printer, multi-line phone, fax, and calculator tasks and operations. Able to work with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Instant Messenger, and Internet/Intranet. Willing to learn and work with Smart Flow, Ezyvet, and other Hospital software applications.

    + Ability to work independently and with little or no supervision

    + Ability to multi-task and produce quality work while making effective decisions

    + Knowledge of basic veterinary practices, procedures, and terminology.

    + Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous material, cleaning chemicals, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.

    + Ability to communicate well with other GCVS staff members.

    + Fluent English skills (speaking and reading) are required for the role; fluency in multiple languages is a plus.
