    Job Description

    MAIN FUNCTION:

    The GI Nurse Lab Educator is responsible for coordinating education and maintaining regulatory requirements for staff in the department. Works in collaboration with the GI Lab- Endoscopy Nurse Director, Assistant Nurse Manager, RNs techs, GI Fellows and Gastroenterologist. Reports to Nurse Director of GI Lab.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    ** 1. Demonstrates the use of the nursing process in clinical practice utilizing assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation.

    ** 2. Demonstrates a high level of clinical expertise and technical skills within the unit/department.

     

    Remains clinically competent in GI Nursing.

     

    ** 3. Formulates educational/staff development programs utilizing total age-appropriate criteria which meets the needs of individual patients.

    4. Utilizes theories of teaching and learning to meet identified patient/family and staff educational needs.

    5. Coordinates the orientation process of new employees and serves as a resource for preceptors.

    ** 6. Collaborates with the Unit Director to identify educational needs within the unit/department, and formulates a written goal-directed plan of education to address priority areas.

    ** 7. Is responsible for providing staff development, educational programs, and in servicing, as appropriate, to cover all staff/all shifts.

    ** 8. Maintains appropriate documentation of orientation activities and on-going educational programs including objectives, class content, evaluations, and employee attendance. Also develops annual educational competencies in accordance with hospital and regulatory agencies. (Joint Commission and Dept. of Health).

    ** 9. Maintains appropriate documentation of the following on the unit: Competency completion, Inservice/Staff Development programs, and Certification. Forwards necessary information to the Education Department and Human Resources.

    ** 10. Assesses the needs; plans; implements; and evaluates educational programs given at the unit level.

    ** 11. Performs review of educational programs and analyzes appropriateness of programs at least annually. Evaluates the effectiveness of these programs using objective measures and submits annual report to the Unit Director. Follows Society of Gastroenterology Nurses Association (SGNA) guidelines to guide practice.

    12. Demonstrates in-depth knowledge base, problem solving, and critical thinking skills by appropriate actions in managing patients and the development of staff educational programs.

    13. Is familiar with and demonstrates Quality in Action/PI principles in daily work and participates in the process as appropriate.

    ** 14. Identifies and acts upon potential risk management issues. Includes this in staff education in-services/programs.

    ** 15. Demonstrates a clear understanding of legal and ethical issues in all aspects of patient care and unit function.

    ** 16. Follows Medical Center/Division of Nursing policy/procedure regarding infection control.

    17. Demonstrates effective communication methods/skills addressing issues in a positive and constructive manner.

    18. Develops effective working relationships with all health care team members, patients, and families.

    19. Remains flexible in staffing to meet the educational/staff development needs of the unit.

    20. It is understood that this role description lists typical duties for the classification and is not considered inclusive of all duties which may be assigned.

    21. Employee understands and demonstrates the importance of satisfying the needs of the customer/patient by interacting with him/her in a friendly and caring way, being attentive to the customer’s needs, both psychologically and physically, and by taking the initiative to maintain communication with the customer to provide a secure and pleasant experience with the Health System.

    EDUCATION:

    Required: Holds current New York State nursing license.

     

    Preferred: BSN or MSN

    EXPERIENCE:

    Required: Minimum 2 years of appropriate nursing practice.

     

    Preferred: Excellent communication and writing abilities.

    CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:

    Basic Life Support (BLS) due within 90 days of hire date and ACLS within 6 months of the employment

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Light to appreciable physical effort required. Moderate to heavy objects lifted, some reaching above head, stooping required. Required to be on feet much of the time. Ability to frequently lift 25 lbs, and occasionally lift 50 lbs.

    EXPOSURE CATEGORY:

    Category I. Tasks that involve exposure to blood and body fluid or tissue.
