Job Description
BJC/Saint Luke's Mid-America Heart Institute is seeking a dedicated and experienced Adult Cardiovascular Genetic Counselor to join our multidisciplinary team. This role involves providing comprehensive genetic counseling services to adult patients with inherited cardiovascular conditions, working closely within our cardiology practice. The counselor will assess patients’ personal and family histories, discuss genetic testing options, interpret results, connect with family members to provide family screening when appropriate, and guide management decisions to improve patient outcomes.
Some genetic cardiovascular conditions that we commonly encounter include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM), hereditary amyloidosis, familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), arrhythmia disorders, and aortopathies. We also have a mature adult congenital heart disease program in affiliation with Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.
This position requires strong communication skills to educate patients and families about the implications of genetic findings including risks, treatment options, and lifestyle modifications. The counselor will also collaborate with healthcare providers to integrate genetic information into personalized treatment plans and document within our medical record. Participation in research initiatives, clinical trials, and educational programs within the institution is encouraged to advance the field of cardiovascular genetics.
Qualified candidates must have a master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program and be certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC). Experience in cardiovascular genetics is preferred but not required. The ideal candidate will be compassionate, detail-oriented, and capable of working in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Saint Luke's Mid-America Heart Institute offers a collaborative and supportive work environment, competitive salary and benefits, and opportunities for professional development. This is a unique opportunity to play a vital role in the advancement of personalized cardiovascular care, helping patients and their families navigate the complexities of inherited heart diseases.
