    Salary Grade NC20 Salary Range $67,852.00 - $118,741.00

     

    Evaluates, designs and prepares engineering plans, specifications and estimates for PRR on existing structures. Evaluates damage and prepares plans for Emergency repairs for impact or other immediate damage. Study bridge inspection reports and evaluate the structural condition of moderately complex and complex bridges based on the inspection report data. Analyze and load rate structural elements or connections on a variety of structure types including bridges, culverts, and pipes. Utilize advanced software to determine safe load carrying capacities of all structural members and connections. Analyze and evaluate maintenance proposals from Division personnel for upgrades to bridge structures in their efforts to improve load ratings. Reviews and evaluates engineered repairs performed by Division personnel in response to Priority Maintenance/Critical Finds identified in inspection reports. Layout and design of bridges, culverts, and other structures in accordance with AASHTO Specifications and Structures Management Unit Design Manual, policies and procedures. Includes structures on geometrically complex alignments and/or technically complex design requirements, such as continuous or curved steel girders, moveable bridge components, trusses and connections. Uses High Level and Moderately High-level computer software such as STAAD, Merlin-Dash, and Bently OpenBridge Software. Attends Division meetings, scoping meetings and field inspections to coordinate with field personnel and other units, anticipate field problems, coordinate repair and preservation activity and improve plan constructability. Provides technical/field support as needed to Divisions for construction errors, bridge repair, and rehabilitation issues. Reviews municipal bridge plans and structure encroachments for structures that will be added to the state system. Interacts and communicates internally with the Structures Management Unit and externally with the Divisions, the Roadway Design Unit, Geotechnical Engineering Unit, and the Hydraulics Unit to acquire clarification, and ensure consistency. Communicates with Division Personnel and other stakeholders to determine project priorities, assist in recommending solutions and resolving issues. Attends conferences and classes on new code changes or computer software.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

    Additional Expectations:

    Management prefers the following: Expert level of knowledge and understanding of engineering concepts and practices related to bridge repair, preservation, rehabilitation, and replacement projects. Thorough knowledge of internal organizational structure, business objectives, budget considerations. Ability to make final complex decisions, compliant with engineering principles, standards, codes or regulations, and design needs. Ability to research alternatives and designs or analyze special details for non-standard bridge types or items of work. Ability to determine program and project priorities. Ability to manage broad variety of project types in bridge program. Ability to independently make final recommendations and decisions that require specialized engineering and/or program knowledge. Ability to explain complex engineering concepts and related facts in a clear, concise and organized manner. Ability to write clear, concise and organized documents, and reports addressing engineering concepts, practices and regulations. Registration as a Professional Engineer in North Carolina is preferred.

     

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
