    *MISSION STATEMENT*

     

    The mission of The University of Texas M. D.     *SUMMARY *

     

    The primary purpose of the Patient Care Technician (PCT) position is to provide patient care services as assigned by a registered nurse. The PCT impacts patient comfort and outcome of care.

     

    *Shift / Hour: Monday - Friday (rotating weekends) / 0630 - 1500*

    *JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES*

    * Partners with Health Care Team and Effective Communication * Partners with Health Care Team:

    a. Responsibilities include completion of routine or advanced patient care assignments as delegated.

    b. Understands critical changes to patient status and reports concerns to appropriate nursing staff. Escalates patient safety issues to charge nurse/leadership team.

    c. Works with multidisciplinary team members to identify and address patient care needs.

    d. Effectively and professionally resolves conflict with team members, provides and receives timely feedback to ensure collaboration and positively impact patient care and patient satisfaction scores.

    e. Participates in team and peer evaluations.

    f. Demonstrates superior customer service in all interactions with patients, families, visitors, and colleagues.

    g. Always identify patients according to Institutional Policy.

    h. Provide nourishment to patients as directed by the clinical nurse.

    i. Remove peripheral IV.

    Supports Patients:

    a. Aids in completion of activities of daily living, mobilization, admit/discharge, and vital signs in a distinct patient setting.

    b. Encourages patients in progression of wellness and promotes independence.

    * Work Environment and Systems * Work Environment:

    a. Maintains environment in a clean, safe, and orderly manner.

    b. Maintains unit and institutional competencies and adheres to legal and regulatory requirements.

    c. Participates in unit projects focused on improving patient outcomes.

    Systems:

    a. Demonstrates knowledge and utilization of computers, equipment, and software programs to enter patient data, access information, and communicate with the multidisciplinary team.

    b. Successfully complete required on-line training.

    c. Demonstrate accountability by reviewing electronic/written communication from the Division of Nursing and MDACC.

    d. Participate in educational events and competency check off.

    e. State purpose and whereabouts when leaving the unit.

    * PCT * Position Description Addendum for Patient Care Technician

    • Promote a safe environment of care through extensive knowledge on operating, maintaining, and cleaning of all equipment.

    • Clean/ disinfect cardiac monitoring cable, stretchers, and wheelchairs and return them to the designated storage locations.

    • Strict compliance with the principles of aseptic technique when providing care to patients.

    • Always identify patients according to institutional policy

    • Escalate patient safety issues to charge nurse/ leadership team

    • Assist in obtaining vital signs.

    • Make sure bedside table, telephone and call light within patients' reach

    • Assist in ambulation, out of bed to chair and/or going to bathroom or commode

    • Provide nourishment to patients as directed by the clinical nurse

    • Empty drains and Foley catheters

    • Remove peripheral IV

    • Document in electronic health record

    • Assist patient/family with gathering personal belongings

    • Transporting patients safely to and from the perioperative area in a timely manner so to not delay patient care.

    • Order SCD's, pillows, linens and supplies

    • Discard disposable equipment, supplies, trash, suction canisters, etc

    • Maintain supply inventory management and audit for expired items.

    • Handle and transport laboratory specimens and samples prompt

    • Assist in identifying barriers to patient care and solutions

    • Participate in educational events and competency check off

    *REQUIREMENTS *

    *Education Required:* High school diploma or equivalent.

    *Preferred Education:* Successful completion of a CNA program or Some College

    *Certification Required:* None

    *Preferred Certification:* Nursing Assistant Certification

    *Experience Required:* None

    *Preferred Experience:* 1 year Nursing Assistant experience in an acute care facility, or 2 years of Nursing Assistant experience in other healthcare.

    *Onsite Presence: 100% onsite Is Required *

     

    Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
