Job Description
As the new two-year residential college division of Boston College, Messina College offers an associate’s degree program for 200 first-generation students annually. The program’s goal is to prepare students to enroll in a bachelor’s degree program or begin their professional careers. Messina College students live and study on the Brookline Campus of Boston College and have full access to BC’s facilities and events.
The Assistant Director of Career Education at Messina College serves as the point of contact for industry partners and Messina students for the required internship program and career development programming at the College. Reporting to the Associate Dean, the position requires close collaboration with the BC Career Center to establish a career educational model appropriate to the 2-year-college level. The incumbent will also support the Pine Manor Institute Academy summer program by providing career readiness workshops and programs.
As the on-campus career coach, the Assistant Director is responsible for one-on-one and group career coaching, coordination and teaching of a required internship course, and collaborating with partners within and beyond the BC Career Center on career programming, networking events, creation of online resources, and other related educational events and employer engagement. With the support of the BC Career Center, the Assistant Director is responsible for identifying and maintaining external relationships with internship partners in the four Messina majors (Applied Data Science, Applied Psychology and Human Development, General Business, and Health Sciences), as well as identifying opportunities for direct employment upon graduation with an Associate’s degree.
The Assistant Director should be a strong relationship builder with multiple stakeholders (including students, alumni, employers, and faculty), adept at event management and programming, and adaptable to changing market trends and student interests. The ideal candidate should have familiarity with serving first-generation students and/or community college career center experience and be open to creatively supporting students in their post-Associate’s degree pathways. As a critical member of the Messina College team, the Assistant Director supports campus life and student success by facilitating meaningful programs and career advising.
In addition, the individual in this role works closely with the BC Career Center team and operates within the broader vision and mission of the Career Center to empower students to pursue careers and lives of meaning and purpose. The Assistant Director’s work will be informed by a career development model – Explore, Prepare, Act – which considers the needs of students at each stage of this process. Though this position resides in Messina College, the person in this role will also need to align their work and priorities with those of the Career Center.
