SPECIAL SALARY INFORMATION
$36.03 per session.
A session is equivalent to 2 hours.
DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, performs firefighting and rescue duties in all types of fires and other emergency situations, on an as needed basis.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
Positions allocable to this class are temporary and receive training to respond to structure fires, wildland fires, traffic collisions, incident support, medical aids and other all-risk emergencies. Depending on the assignment, positions are supervised by either a Call Fire Fighter Supervisor or Fire Captain. Incumbents have the responsibility to respond to their assigned site or emergency scene on an as needed basis. These positions must respond immediately at any hour of the day or night, in any weather, to combat life or property threatening emergencies.
All positions in this class require the physical stamina to perform such strenuous activities as ascending or descending ladders while carrying victims or equipment in order to effect rescues, as well as the ability to manipulate equipment, such as fire hoses, power tools and hand tools. Incumbents must also be able to receive and follow orders from superiors, under stressful and noisy conditions; and be prepared and able to communicate with other fire fighters through verbal and non-verbal communication cues, such as radios and use of hand signals. Incumbents typically work under hazardous conditions and are exposed to fire, smoke, and other hazardous elements.
Essential Job Functions
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this class.
+ Responds to fire and other emergency incident calls in a defined geographical area of the Los Angeles County Fire Department within a timeframe established by the Department.
+ Drives and operates fire apparatus and equipment.
+ Reads maps and communicates the location of fires to the appropriate authorities.
+ Performs basic firefighting and lifesaving functions, including but not limited to, selecting hose and nozzle depending on the type of fire; creating openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance; and positioning and climbing ladders to gain access to the upper levels of buildings.
+ Provides basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as needed.
+ Assists in the evaluation of persons endangered by fire or disaster as needed.
Non-emergency response duties include but are not limited to:
+ Participates in prescribed drills and training activities.
+ Participates in educating the public on fire safety.
+ Maintains station records.
+ Performs assigned duties in maintaining facilities, buildings, quarters, apparatus, equipment, and hydrants.
+ Reviews and inspects hazardous conditions within assigned jurisdiction.
Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from high school* (or its equivalent).
LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License is required at time of hiring.* *
A valid California Class C Driver License with Firefighter endorsement, tank endorsement, with no air brake or manual transmission restrictions is required within twelve months from the date of completing the training academy.
PHYSICAL CLASS:
Physical Class IV– Arduous: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be able to perform the essential functions of this classification, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Incumbents must be willing and able to report to one of the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s Call Fire Fighter Station communities within a timeframe established by the Department.
CERTIFICATION:
+ California Title 22 First Aid certification from either the American Red Cross or American Heart Association within six months of appointment.
+ A valid Emergency Medical Technician certification may be substituted for the First Aid certification.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
* A copy of a high school diploma, its equivalent, or a higher degree from an accredited institution. Evidence of high school equivalent includes passing the GED, TASC, HISET, or CHSPE. Accredited high schools are those accredited by certifying organizations recognized by the United State Department of Education and include accredited public and non-public high schools in the United State and accredited United Stated Department of Defense high schools.
In order to receive credit for a high school diploma, its equivalent, or higher degree, you must include a legible copy of either the official diploma/degree, official transcript(s), or official letter from the accredited institution (which shows the date the diploma/degree was awarded) with the Registrar's signature and school seal. Failure to provide proof of education will result in application rejection.
Note: A printout of the transcript from the school's website is NOT considered official and therefore, will not be accepted and will result in your application being incomplete and rejected.

Publications such asAccrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC),American Universities and CollegesandInternational Handbook of Universitiesare acceptable references. Also acceptable, if appropriate, are degrees that have been evaluated and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from United States accredited institutions by an academic credential evaluation agency recognized byThe National Association of Credential Evaluation Services or theAssociation of International Credential Evaluators, Inc.(AICE).
* * Successful applicants as per class spec, driving is required must acquire and present a copy of their driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.
If the applicant does not have a driving record from the State of California, the applicant may be required to provide their driving record from any other state/jurisdiction.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
Applicants will be placed on a list of eligible candidates without indication of relative standing in the examination. The appointing power may appoint any one of the names on the appropriate list, except a person without Veterans credit may not be appointed if there are three or more names on the list of persons entitled to Veteran's credit. The names of candidates who qualify will be placed on the eligible register for a period of twelve (12) monthsfollowing the date of promulgation.
BACKGROUND CHECK AND MEDICAL EXAMINATION INFORMATION:
Candidates who are given a conditional offer of employment will be required to complete a criminal background check, including a fingerprint scan, followed by a medical examination. A candidate with a conviction history that has a direct and adverse relationship with the duties of the Call Fire Fighter, NC position may have his or her conditional offer of employment rescinded and be removed from the certification list pursuant to Civil Service Rule 6.04.
Successful completion of a medical examination and the ability to perform all essential functions of the Call Fire Fighter, NC classification are required. A candidate who does not successfully complete a medical examination or is unable to perform all of the essential functions of the Call Fire Fighter, NC may have their conditional offer of employment rescinded and be removed from the certification list pursuant to Civil Service Rule 6.04.
