    Summary This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard, Industrial Department, Structural Group in Balitmore, MD. Responsibilities You will be responsible for working with and leading a group of specialists, mechanics, workers and helpers performing inspections and all kinds of shipfitting and welding tasks. Being a civilian working for the Coast Guard makes you a valuable team member. Typical duties include: Performing and witnessing inspection on a variety of both fabricated and repair work performed by others on structural and non-structural ship components and completed structures. Inspecting for dimensional control, tolerances, wear corrosion, structural or surface defects, alignment, workmanship, correct assembly, security, and compliance with blueprints, specifications, and other inspections. Performing non-destructive testing, evaluates and interprets all inconsistencies, and determining the parts usability for service. Performing welding tasks to include but not limited to common welding practices using shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), flux core arc welding (FCAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) equipment. Training and mentoring lower grade employees and willfully give suggestions and demonstrations to properly and efficiently complete different shipfitting, welding and inspecting tasks and procedures. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: 1. Ability to inspect (SCREENOUT) 2. Knowledge of equipment, structure, materials, etc. (includes constructing, repair, and forging) 3. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading) 4. Layout and pattern development (includes geometric projection and triangulation) 5. Ability to use hand tools, power tools, etc. for metal work 6. Dexterity (assembly, disassembly, reassembly, etc.) National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education This position does not have a positive education requirement.
