    Summary, Focus and Purpose

     

    Under the direction of a supervisor or assigned technical staff, the Animal Technician | Level 2 completes a wide variety of tasks and operations in GMP controlled environments that are required to supply production. Strict bio-security measures which include principles of isolation, personnel/material flow, and sanitation are followed to minimize exposure of infectious agents to specific pathogen free (SPF) chicken flocks housed at the West Point site.

    This role includes duties related to:

    + Health, care, maintenance, security, and safety of animals.

    + Maintaining SPF status of flocks.

    + Ensuring physical facilities and equipment are in good working order.

    + Working collaboratively with management and technicians in a union environment.

    Duties including but not limited to:

    + Strict adherence to biosecurity measures (e.g., no contact with birds, showering approximately six (6) times a day, frequent uniform/ gowning changes, use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), disinfection of incoming materials, etc...)

    + Perform animal husbandry and housekeeping duties such as handling, grooming, feeding, cleaning, health checks, etc...

    + Breeding which includes collection, transfer, and artificial insemination.

    + Perform all duties associated with collecting, identifying, disinfecting, storing, incubating, candling, and distributing fertile eggs.

    + Operation and use of euthanasia equipment.

    + SPF sample collection which includes working with needles to draw blood.

    + Hatching, wing banding, and brooding of new flocks.

    + Operation and cleaning of equipment (i.e., incubators, refrigerators, hatchers, rack washer).

    + Stock and maintain supplies.

    + Willing and able to work off-shift and weekends, as needed. Department operates 7 days a week (utilizing O/T coverage on weekends and holidays)

    + cGMP documentation of tasks associated with assigned work.

    + Must be able to lift 40lbs independently.

    + Frequent walking, pushing/pulling, and standing required.

    + Operation of company vehicle.

    Education Requirement

    + High School Diploma or GED

    + Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) Certification

    Required Experience | Skills | Knowledge

    + Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) Certification

    + Must have protective titers to Measles, Mumps, Rubella, and Varicella viruses.

    + Must not own or have frequent contact with any bird species.

    Preferred Experience | Skills | Knowledge

    + Familiar with chicken animal husbandry.

    + Familiar with phlebotomy (blood draw) of animals.

    + Strong leadership capability, problem-solving skills and a hands-on approach to problem solving.

    + One to 2 years of cGMP experience in a pharmaceutical or laboratory environment.

    + Valid driver’s license.
