    Talen Energy has a job opening for a Principal Chemical/Environmental Engineer. The position will be located at the Brandon Shores Power Plant in Baltimore, MD (Pasadena area). Brandon Shores is a coal-fired generating station. We are looking for candidates with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or equivalent and a minimum of 10 years’ experience, preferably in operating and maintaining pollution-control systems and steam, water. and wastewater systems in a coal-fired power plant, as well as managing plant activities to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements associated with air, water, oil, waste, and radiation environmental permits.

     

    The expected salary range for this position is $135,000.00 to $145,000.00 annually. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job-related factors as permitted by law. Successful candidates will also participate in Talen Energy’s Short-Term Incentive program.

    Job Summary

    This position requires working independently to handle multiple complex and varied responsibilities with minimal guidance, using sound engineering judgment and effective communication. Responsible for oversight, management and direction of plant environmental activities to ensure compliance with all environmental regulatory requirements, including requirements associated with air, water, oil, waste, and radiation permits. Provide oversight and guidance for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of all pollution control systems, including SCR, DSI, PJFF, wet FGD scrubbers, and wastewater treatment, including sequencing batch reactors for biological denitrification. Responsible for monitoring and directing operations and maintenance activities to ensure proper chemistry is maintained in all boiler water, cooling water and demineralizer systems. Manage and maintain all chemical inventories.

    Primary Responsibilities

    1. Monitor all environmental limits on a daily basis and provide guidance on actions to take when out of compliance.

    2. Provide daily operation and maintenance activity oversight for the FGD scrubber and wastewater systems to ensure reliability, safety, and environmental compliance on all permits and to ensure quality of gypsum produced. FGD scrubber wastewater treatment oversight requires managing biomass in sequencing batch reactors for nitrification/denitrification.

    3. Direct daily laboratory analytical tests and make operational process changes as needed to maintain emissions compliance.

    4. Troubleshoot system issues with operations and maintenance when needed, and identify and plan for any needed maintenance work.

    5. Monitor boiler chemistry to ensure units are operating within established EPRI-based limits. Work with operations to troubleshoot out-of-spec conditions.

    6. Monitor chemistry of cooling water systems to control scaling, corrosion and cleanliness. Provide guidance on chemical feed rates, work with contractors to complete mechanical cleanings.

    7. Ensure sufficient inventories are maintained for bulk and tote chemicals. Track all chemical ordering and receiving. Provide monthly accruals.

    8. Interpret and provide technical guidance to plant personnel and management concerning compliance with federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations.

    9. Assist in preparing, reviewing, maintaining and updating environmental permits and compliance reports.

    10. Interact with the corporate environmental group and government agencies.

    Minimum Qualifications

    1. Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or equivalent.

    2. 10 years of experience in coal-fired power plant pollution control and environmental compliance or related technical experience.

    3. Thorough understanding of process chemistry, unit operations, analytical analysis, and engineering principles.

    4. Ability to work with and lead/manage a team of licensed WWTP operations employees.

    Preferred Qualifications

    1. Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.

    2. At least 15 years of experience with coal-fired power plant pollution control systems, including biological wastewater treatment, and environmental compliance.

    3. Experience in leading plant environmental operations and maintenance.
