    OVERVIEW

    The expected pay range for this position is $109,388 to $120,000 per annum.

    Financial Management Services (FMS), a department within Business Affairs, is responsible for creating an ecosystem which promotes innovative and sound financial administration policies and practices that balance controls, compliance, and customer service. FMS is primarily responsible for financial policy oversight, quality assurance and financial services at Stanford University and its affiliated entities. It also serves as a liaison to the hospitals and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC).     JOB PURPOSE

    The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), signed into law in December 2017, significantly expanded our tax reporting responsibilities—particularly with respect to the excise tax on net investment income. In this increasingly complex tax environment, we are seeking a professional to analyze, track, remit and report on our excise tax liabilities. A strong understanding of key components of investment tax compliance, including partnership basis tracking and taxable events within investment funds is essential for success in this role.

     

    Operating within our collaborative culture, you will have the opportunity to streamline and improve processes, actively shaping the direction of the position while continuing to build your expertise. This role also offers the unique opportunity to work closely with both the Tax Compliance and Investment Accounting teams to support the University’s compliance with the TCJA.

     

    This position has become available due to the resignation of the current incumbent, creating an opportunity to step into a critical and evolving role within the tax department. This position will report to Senior Tax Manager, Compliance.

    CORE DUTIES:

    + Preparing current and deferred tax analyses for quarterly and year-end tax provision. Construct and assemble data for decision making; develop conclusions, and present high level summary of recommendations.

    + Prepare and review of the excise tax return for Stanford and its affiliates; determine appropriate procedures for tax accounting, research of transactions and reporting. Oversee, reconcile, and resolve problems relative to tax matters.

    + Prepare monthly tax compliance reports and reconciliations. Generate, review, analyze and communicate tax data that reflects actual liabilities against estimated liabilities. Prepare and present quantitative and qualitative analyses focusing on variances from estimates and prior data.

    + Maintain tax basis for all investments and support all compliance efforts related to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act; recommend and implement any approved modifications; perform preliminary tax analysis and recommend solutions. Develop and maintain desktop procedures and process documentation for area of responsibility and ensure compliance.

    + Run and analyze tax reports, often from multiple systems; prepare management information reports; assist with accurate and timely filing/remittance of tax payments

    + Execute internal control programs established by management, research new regulations, and recommend and assist in the enhancement of our tax accounting system. May manage compliance program for area of responsibility, and create complex compliance reports.

    + Contribute to unit and organization strategy; assist in the development of change management plans and materials as needed. Participate as a member of a project team; support new initiatives. Make decisions determining approach to managing and completing processes.

    + Participate in critical analysis of existing systems and processes, and identify opportunities for process improvement. Review and document tax processes and related systems to ensure compliance with internal control requirements, develop and implement complex test cases, perform system testing and analyze results.

    + Serve as a resource to local units and other departments to resolve tax related issues.

    + May act as a lead, train, coach, and review the work of other staff, as needed. Contribute primarily through applying individual expertise.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Education & Experience:

    + Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field plus four years of applicable experience, or combination of education and relevant work experience.

    + CPA and/or Masters in Tax strongly preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    + Demonstrated knowledge of corporate and partnership tax rules.

    + Understanding of alternative investments and their tax issues.

    + Ability to analyze and synthesize complex data; high attention to detail.

    + Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly and effectively communicate information to and educate internal and external audiences and client groups.

    + Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to build relationships and work cross functionally.

    + Strong organization, planning and project management skills; ability to prioritize tasks to meet business requirements and deadlines.

    + Customer focused, with continuous improvement mindset, problem anticipation and resolution.

    + Ability to interact with all levels of the organization and drive process improvements according to best practices while ensuring adherence to Stanford policies and all applicable laws and regulations.

    + Advanced knowledge of Microsoft applications, such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

    Certifications and Licenses:

    CPA or Enrolled Agent preferred

    + Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.

    + Frequently sit, sort, file paperwork or parts, grasp lightly, and use fine manipulation, lift, carry, push and pull objects that weigh 10 pounds or less.
