Position Summary: The Director of Nursing, General Surgery, will provide strategic leadership in collaboration with the provider leadership team for General Surgery, Trauma Critical Care, Inpatient Rehabilitation and Inpatient Dialysis at Hartford Hospital. The Director will drive outcomes, design creative solutions and build bridges among the organization’s stakeholders to advance key initiatives and promote innovation. The Director will collaborate with physician leaders, the executive leadership team and relevant clinical and administrative leaders to plan comprehensive programs and ensure that the highest level of quality patient centered care is delivered. Working closely with the Vice President of Patient Care Services, the Director will improve operating results across the service lines by creating an integrated service line business plan and operational metrics that align with the achievement of key hospital strategic objectives. Key Accountabilities: * Provides leadership to the unit managers in identifying resources required to achieve quality and safe patient care results. As a champion of the Hartford Healthcare culture, the Director models the HHC Leadership behaviors to inspire and mentor staff * Develops and monitors operating budget for units and related services and assures appropriate resource allocations. Provides financial management expertise for strategic planning, budgeting, analysis and decision-making * Prepares and/or examines various financial and non-financial reports and analyzes the impact of actual and/or proposed operational changes in meeting corporate and divisional initiatives * Creates a thriving, trusting team culture. Provides team with clear expectations, positive and constructive feedback to maximize potential and improve performance. Encourages professional development, identifying opportunities for growth and ongoing education * Collaborates with administration, peers, colleagues and attending physicians regarding the patient care model with a focus on aligning nursing practice to ensure consistency and continuity across the organization * Demonstrates excellent clinical skills, promotes interdepartmental relationships, models professional behavior uses effective communication strategies, acts as a role model for staff and contributes to meeting the mission and goals of Hartford HealthCare and Hartford Hospital * Ensures compliance with Joint Commission as well as State, local and federal regulatory agencies. Consults with recommendations of professional bodies to ensure evidence-based practice * As patient safety champion, the Director provides thought leadership in a range of critical areas including patient experience, care logistics, employee engagement and EMS strategy * Bachelor's Degree in related field and Master's Degree are required. One degree must be in nursing * Current license in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut * Five plus years of progressive nursing leadership experience in an acute care setting * Experience in direct operational issues in a 24/7 clinical environment * Highly effective analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills * Strong communications skills required - both written and verbal * Visible leader with excellent interpersonal communication skills who relates well with all levels of the organization * A creative, forward-thinking leader with the proven ability to engage, coach and mentor direct reports, colleagues and other key stakeholders * A demonstrated track record designing strategies and delivering solutions in areas including, but not limited to, patient experience, patient safety, employee engagement and workflow redesign * The ability to work with diverse groups of physicians (voluntary/full-time, teaching/nonteaching) and appreciate their contributions to the strategic direction of the healthcare system We take great care of careers.
